OXFORD, Ala. – No. 4/10 UWF baseball opened play at the GSC Championship with a thrilling 4-3 10 inning win vs. 8-seed Shorter, whose frantic upset bid fell just shy in extra frames.
Adam Imwalle finished with three RBIs, including the game-winner.
The top-seeded Argos move into the winners' bracket of the tournament and battle 4-seed Alabama Huntsville Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
"I was just proud of our guys hanging in there," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "Shorter played an outstanding game. We knew they'd come in playing with all they've got."
Andrew Vaccacio got the start for UWF and limited the Hawks to just one hit but also walked five in six innings. He struck out eight in a no-decision.
The Argo bats drew 10 total walks in the game while issuing eight.
Adam Imwalle picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to put UWF up 1-0 in the first after the bats drew three walks in the opening frame.
Shorter scratched two runs across in the top of the second and third before Imwalle picked up his second RBI on a base hit to score
Trevor Payne in the bottom of the third to equalize at 2-2.
Robert Lopez hammered his fifth homer of the season in the sixth to briefly give the Argos a 3-2 lead. An eighth inning home run by Samyr Santos off of reliever
Tony Rossi in the eighth drew Shorter level at 3-3.
After
Kirk Maddox left two aboard behind Rossi in the eighth,
Daniel Floyd entered and posted scoreless ninth and 10th innings to move to 6-1 on the season.
In the bottom of the 10th,
Matt Sullivan drew a leadoff walk. A key throwing error on a pickoff attempt by the catcher Santos moved him to third. The Hawks then intentionally loaded the bases before Imwalle drew the fourth straight Argo walk to earn the walkoff win.
The walkoff was the third of the season for the Argos. Sullivan has scored the winning run in all three. Imwalle has produced a game-winning hit or game-winning walk in two of the three.
Each squad finished with four hits. Jonathan Pintaro (2-4) suffered the loss for the Hawks (22-20). Floyd struck out two in two innings to earn his first win since Mar. 27 at Montevallo. The marathon game lasted 3 hours 27 minutes.
Tony Kucera (7-1) is expected to start for the Argonauts Saturday vs. Alabama Huntsville. The Argos (34-14) are 1-1 vs. the Chargers (27-19) so far this season.
