UWF Their 19th GSC Championship and the 100th Conference Championship in UWF History

The Argos are on their way to the NCAA Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The seventh-ranked UWF women's tennis team's only conference loss was against West Alabama in regular season heading into Saturday's Gulf South Conference Tournament championship match against UWA. The Argos came out today and proved that they earned the championship title.

The Argonauts went on a 4-0 sweep at Lagoon Park Tennis Center for the program's ninth-consecutive title and 19th in the last 25 years.

This was also an even greater conference win marking today's GSC Championship win as the 100th conference championship win in University of West Florida history. The UWF Women's Tennis team proudly raised the 100th conference championship trophy adding to the schools legacy.

UWF (20-8) never trailed the entire weekend sweeping the entire tournament only losing one match going 12-1 in three matches.

UWF v. UM (4-0)

Doubles Competition

1. Bonardi/Vlad (UWF) defeat Garcia/Hanzek (UM) 6-1

2. Silwanowicz/Araujo (UWF) defeat Beatty/Leu (UM) 6-4

Singles Competition

2. Karolina Silwanowicz (UWF) defeats Emily Beatty (UM) 6-1, 6-1

3. Jennifer Rink (UWF) defeats Anne-Christine Leu (UM) 6-0, 6-0

4. Gabriela Araujo (UWF) defeats Amanda Gautreaux (UM) 6-2, 6-1

Doubles Competition

1. Bonardi/Vlad (UWF) defeat Kimball/Morozova (MC) 6-1

2. Golawska/Bueno (MC) defeat Silwanowicz/Araujo (UWF) 7-5

3. Rink/Mixon (UWF) defeat Carrera/Cota (MC) 7-5

Singles Competition

1. Berta Bonardi (UWF) defeats Alisa Morozova (MC) 6-0, 6-0

2. Karolina Silwanowicz (UWF) defeats Nicole Bueno (MC) 6-1, 6-4

6. Heather Mixon (UWF) defeats Rebecca Grace Kimball (MC) 6-0, 6-1

UWF v. UWA (4-1)

The Argos knew going into todays match that the doubles point was going to be vital to win in order to build momentum and to gain the lead going into singles. The first match to finish was partners Jennifer Rink and Heather Mixon as they lost 6-3 giving West Alabama the advantage.

Next to finish was Karolina Silwanowicz and Gabriella Araujo as they defeated UWA's Sarah Manseri and Liliana Araucz 6-4 allowing the Argos to continue to fight. The final match came down to Berta Bonardi and Dianna Vlad as they battled against Andrea Tomassone and Georgina Salom. The No. 12 doubles team showed their strength and won 6-3 and earning the doubles point for the Argos and the lead 1-0.

West Florida used that momentum to come out and take singles. First to finish was Karolina Silwanowicz who owned Sarah Manseri in straight sets 6-0, 6-4. Following her was Jennifer Rink who put up a long fight against Haina Franco, but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-4 making it a 2-1 match.

No. 1 Berta Bonardi was next to give UWF a win as she took down Daryna Hukasian 6-3, 6-1 and advancing the score 3-1.

The final point to give the Argos the GSC championship was Dianna Vlad at the five spot as she defeated Andrea Tomassone in straight sets, 7-6, 6-0, to clinch the championship for the Argonauts.

UWF will now wait to see where they will be seeded in the upcoming NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship. The selection show will be aired by the NCAA on Tuesday, May 7th at 7:30 pm CT on ncaa.com. Regional play will begin Saturday, May 11th.
