OXFORD, Ala. – No. 4/10 UWF Baseball made it two for two Sunday, knocking off surging 7-seed West Georgia 11-8 to move to 3-0 at the Gulf South Championship. UWF will now take on 3-seed Delta State Monday at 2:00 p.m.
"Really just proud of the guys grinding it out and coming out here ready to play," said UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat, whose team defeated Alabama Huntsville 12-8 earlier in the day. "For us to get two W's, just couldn't be prouder of these guys."
Daniel Floyd got the start for the Argos and was able to hold the Wolves mostly under wraps. He threw 118 pitches in a gutsy eight-frame performance, striking out six and scattering 11 hits in moving to 7-1 on the season. Floyd has now fired 10 innings during the Championship and earned two wins.
UWF seized control early with a six-run bottom of the second vs. Wolves starter Cory Bartholomew and reliever Greyson McLeod.
Matthew Estrada continued to burnish his resume for Player of the Championship with a two-RBI single. He would also finish the game with two runs scored.
Mike Farnell went deep for a two-run blast in the fifth to extend the Argonaut advantage to 9-3. UWF hit four home runs in two games Sunday.
Hunter Lucas and
Kirk Maddox combined to finish the ninth on the mound. Bartholomew suffered the loss for West Georgia (28-24). The Wolves remain alive in the Championship and will face off against Valdosta State Monday at 11:00 a.m.
Matt Sullivan finished the game with two hits and two RBIs.
Isaac Phillips racked up three hits and two runs.
Dylan Menhennett notched a pair of runs scored as well. Mathew Jones piled up a pair of hits, two runs and an RBI.
The Argonauts are the only team to complete the weekend 3-0. UWF is the only team guaranteed a spot on Tuesday, the final day of the double-elimination tournament. The full bracket is available
