PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF women's volleyball team will open Gulf South Conference play on Tuesday night against the only league team to beat them in the past two seasons - the Alabama Huntsville Chargers. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at the UWF Field House and the match is the annual Blackout match with all fans encouraged to wear black clothing. The first 350 UWF students will receive a free Blackout t-shirt.
UWF is 7-5 on the season and coming off a successful 3-1 weekend at the Pacer Invitational in Aiken, S.C.
Senior All-American
Jordyn Poppen leads the offense with 3.22 kills per set. Redshirt freshman
Veresia Yon has 2,63 kills per set and paces the Argonauts with a .354 hitting percentage, which is also fourth in the GSC.
UAH enters the match with a 7-4 record. The Chargers opened the season with six-consecutive home wins before going 1-4 over their last five. Isabelle Barnes is hitting .361 and is third in the GSC. Shayla Libby ranks first in the league with 22 service aces.
UWF went 15-1 in league regular-season play a year ago and swept through the postseason tourney with two wins. The lone blemish on that mark was a 3-1 setback in Huntsville on the opening match. The teams did not play again last season. In 2017, UWF went a combined 18-0 against GSC opposition.
The Argos hold a 25-6 all-time lead in the series with the Chargers. Prior to the loss a year ago, UWF had won 24-consecutive over their rivals from Alabama, UWF is 11-3 in series matches played in Pensacola.
The UWF Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be formally presented with the GSC Overall All-Sports and Women's All-Sports Trophies by University leadership between the first and second sets.
The Argos will continue their homestand this weekend with matches against Mississippi College on Friday and West Alabama on Saturday.
