• The UWF football team returns to Gulf South Conference play for the middle game of a 3-game homestand when it plays host to Mississippi College Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. Central Time.
• UWF will honor the following individuals and teams with on-field recognitions: The Dannheisser's, Chad Bailey and the Softball program.
ABOUT UWF
• UWF enters the game at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play. The Argonauts are coming off a 69-0 home win over Virginia Lynchburg last week.
• The Argo offense is averaging 463 yards per game which ranks second in the GSC and 21st nationally. The passing yards per game lead the league and are 11th in the country at 320. Along those lines, redshirt freshman QB Austin Reed is 13th nationally with 832 passing yards thus far.
• Not to be outdone, the UWF defense has gotten better each game this season and ranks second in the GSC and 29th in the NCAA, allowing 287 yards per game. The points allowed of 11.3 is first in the conference and 11th in the country. UWF has forced five turnovers this season and blocked two kicks.
ABOUT MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE
• Mississippi College is also 2-1 on the young season and coming off a solid 39-27 GSC opening win over North Greenville last Saturday. Both wins came at home, while the Choctaw's loss was to Division I FCS opponent Alcorn State.
• MC averages 23.3 points per game and features an run-oriented offensive attack anchored by dual-threat QB Detric Hawthorn. The senior averages 42 yards rushing and 89 yards passing per game. He was a First Team All-GSC selection a year ago and an Honorable Mention All-America. The Choctaws have rushed 133 times and passed just 22 times in three games.
• MC and UWF are tied for the GSC lead with three fumbles recovered. The Choctaws also lead the league with the fewest penalties, committing just 15 through three games.
SERIES HISTORY
• UWF has won all three games played since the Argonauts started football in 2016. That year, UWF scored on the fourth play of the game and never looked back in securing a 42-28 win in Clinton.
• The 2017 game in Pensacola was played on a Friday night due to the predicted landfall of Tropical Storm Nate. UWF scored the final 21 points for a 28-14 win. Marvin Conley iced the game in the closing minutes with a school-record 98-yard interception return for a TD.
• Last season's game in Clinton was also affected by weather. This time, however, it was a nearly two-hour lightning delay in the GSC Game of the Week. UWF led 10-0 at the half and was able to put the game away in the fourth quarter when it forced two MC turnovers and scored a touchdown en route to a 34-21 victory.
ARGOS STORM PAST VUL IN HOME OPENER
• UWF rattled off 573 yards of total offense in a record-setting 69-0 win last week. The Argos also set records for points in a quarter (35 in the 2nd) and a half (42 in the first).
• The top three quarterbacks on the depth chart all played and either threw for or ran for at least one touchdown. Five running backs and two quarterbacks combined for 222 rushing yards and three touchdowns. A game after nine players caught passes at Shorter, 10 different receivers had a reception and three of them scored.
• The defense continued to make improvement, offering up the fourth shutout in program history and setting a school record for fewest rushing yards allowed with minus 12. They also forced two fumbles and T.J. Williams had a 44-yard interception return for a TD. Nate Holloway blocked a punt and Marcus Clayton returned it to the end zone for the second punt return TD of his career.
LEHTIO TIED FOR CAREER RECEPTIONS MARK
• With four receptions last week, graduate wide receiver Tate Lehtio has moved into a tie with Antoine Griffin for the most receptions in school history at 136. He has 1,547 yards receiving and needs 74 to pass Ishmel Morrow into second place on the career receiving yards list. Griffin holds that record with 1,697 from 2016-18.
UWF STRONG IN BLUE WAHOOS STADIUM NIGHT GAMES
• UWF has enoyed a winning record in two of the three seasons at Blue Wahoos Stadium in the fourth year of the program, amassing a 9-7 record. The Argonauts have been especially successful in night games (5 pm kickoff or later), going 7-2 following last week's domination of Virginia-Lynchburg.
