On a day where three different Argonauts scored and the defense flustered the opposition, the 11th ranked West Florida men's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Union on Sunday afternoon at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex in Jackson, Tennessee.
UWF (6-0-0) is off to its best start in over four years since the 2015 start when they started 5-0. The wins this weekend against Christian Brothers also get the Argos off to a fast start in the Gulf South Conference which is crucial.
West Florida struck early in the first half to build an early lead as senior defender continues to have a productive overall week as he assisted forward
Bernardo Torres to make it 1-0 in the 16th minute, UWF. For Torres, it was his second goal of the season while Wiltshire built off his recent success of being named the GSC defender of the week to put another assist by his name in the statbook.
In the second half it was more of the same for the Argonauts. Almost immediately after halftime, junior foward
Davi Alves found midfielder
Andrew Wentz who connected with his right foot to beat the Bulldog keeper for his first goal of the year to make it 2-0. Redshirt junior
Teavon Spencer capped off the scoring for UWF in the 88th minute off a pass from Alves. It was the first goal of the year for the Jamaican native, Spencer.
The Argo defense was once again stout. The sturdy backline of Wiltshire,
Lucas Barankiewicz and
Brandon Jose continued their strong play early in the season as they only allowed three shots on goal and were able to contain the Union offense as they were limited to two corner kicks.Â
Jihad Gomes once again stood tall in goal by collecting three saves to record his third shutout of the season.
Next Up: West Florida will get some much deserved time off before they return home to face Montevallo on Friday, October 4th. Kickoff is set for 5pm.
