Late goal lifts Argos to win over Saint Leo

Davi Alves wins it for UWF in 68th minute

A late goal in the 68th minute by freshman midfielder Davi Alves propelled the University of West Florida to a win over Saint Leo.

The win moves the Argos to 2-0 on the season while the loss drops the Lions to 0-2 on the young season.

The scoring started early for UWF as redshirt senior forward Sean Hoffstatter snaked through the opposing defense to give the home team the lead.

"He is a finisher," UWF head coach Bill Elliott said of Hoffstatter.  He is a really hard worker and a very determined individual who scores goals.  He did it in high school and he has proven that he can do it at this level as well.  The two games this weekend are no different than the past.  I will tell you how a tough a kid he is.  He has his feet wrapped up like a boxer would wrap their hands because of blisters.  He must have in excruciating pain and to have that and still have the concentration to bury a couple of balls in the back of the net, hats off to him."

For the remainder of the first half, both teams traded scoring chances with Alves and redshirt junior forward Teavon Spencer providing the opportunities for the Argonauts.

After halftime, both teams came out energized but it was Saint Leo who would strike first as midfielder Federico Tellechea blasted a ball in the 54th minute which was just out of the reach of UWF goalkeeper, Jihad Gomes.

Elliott made a wise decision heading into the final third of the game as he inserted Alves into the line-up to provide a much needed scoring juice as Alves would shoot top shelf past the Lions goalkeeper, Christian Evans to make the score 2-1.

West Florida would still have to contain Saint Leo late though.  They ended up succeeding behind a defense that keeps improving every day behind players such as Jerry Wiltshire, Brandon Jose and Lucas Barankiewicz.

"I think our defense did a great job collectively, Elliott stated.  I do not think you could just look at our goalkeeper or just our backline. Collectively, they were good as we held two very good opponents to a pair of goals and hopefully we will be even more stingy moving forward as we continue to be on the same page."

Next Up: The Argonauts get a few days off before returning to action against Rollins on Friday, September 13th.  Kickoff is set for 1pm from Winter Park, Florida.
