Argonauts Drop A Heartbreaker at Shorter, 73-72

Three players scored at least 13 points for UWF

ROME, Ga. – The UWF women's basketball team had three looks at a potential game-winning basket only to come up short in a 73-72 loss to Shorter at the Winthrop-King Centre Thursday night.

UWF trailed by nine with just under eight minutes to play before they mounted a comeback, eventually getting within a point twice in the final three minutes. The Argonauts made a great defensive stop and got the ball down by one in the final 15 seconds. Fanny Hulmi's initial shot was off the mark but Danielle Norquest got an offensive rebound but saw her shot was also missed before Aline Fevrier got a second offensive board but didn't get a shot off as time expired.

UWF (5-12, 1-8 Gulf South) shot 46 percent and posted back-to-back 40-plus percent shooting games for the first time this season. Norquest and Charlotte Ellmore led the team with 19 points each, while Rachel McCree continued her strong play of late with a career-high 13 points. Both McCree and Ellmore had three 3-pointers, while Norquest grabbed 16 rebounds for her 13th double-double.

Shorter (1-12, 1-7) made a season-high 12 triples and shot 44 percent while getting 23 points from Jasmine Gaines and 21 from Mekala Fuller. The Lady Hawks scored 24 points off 16 Argo turnovers.

After a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes that saw three ties a two lead changes, the Argos closed the period on a 6-0 run to grab a 23-22 lead. Neither team shot well in the second quarter, but UWF struggled to the tune of 3-for-19 from the floor and fell behind 36-31 at the break.

In the third period, UWF get with a basket six times and tied it once but never was able to grab the lead. The Lady Hawks scored the first seven points in the fourth to secure their largest lead of the contest, 63-54 with 7:55 to play. That's when UWF made another run and was able to get within a bucket down the stretch.

UWF will travel to West Georgia (11-4, 4-3) on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time contest at the UWG Coliseum.
