UWF Comeback Falls Short in 60-59 Loss to Valdosta State

Norquest and Brown each had a double-double for the Argonauts

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The UWF women's basketball team erased a 12-point deficit and had a chance to win the game but a last-second shot by Danielle Norquest rolled off the rim and allowed Valdosta State to escape with a 60-59 win at The Complex on Thursday night.

UWF trailed by 11 points early in the fourth quarter before eventually knotting the game at 58 with 1:12 to play. VSU went ahead on a Kayla Bonilla layup with 53 seconds left. Faithe Franklin made one of two free throws with 38.7 to play to pull within one. After a Bonilla miss, the Argos got the rebound and called timeout to advance the ball to the frontcourt. Norquest drove the left side of the lane where her running layup was just off target and time expired during the loose ball rebound.

UWF (4-9, 0-5 Gulf South) shot 26 percent but stayed in the game with a 53-36 rebounding edge. They had 17 second chance points on 27 offensive boards.

Norquest had her Division 2-leading tenth double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Fanny Hulmi had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Ashaunti Brown posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.

VSU (11-2, 3-2) ended with 10 3-pointers and a 37 percent night from the floor. Bonilla led the Lady Blazers with 22 points.

VSU came out on fire in the early going, with Bonilla scoring eight points as the Lady Blazers built an 18-7 lead.

UWF got to within six twice in the second quarter before VSU's Jilian King hit a three from the corner to beat the halftime horn and out the home squad up 40-30 at the break.

VSU hit eight triples in the opening 20 minutes and shot 50 percent overall.

The Argos will stay on the road for their next contest when they head to Calera, Ala. to face Montevallo on Monday evening. Tip-off at Trustmark Arena will be at 5:30 p.m.
