UWF Take On AUM, UWA On The Road Thursday, Saturday

The Argos are in sixth place with 8 games remaining in the GSC season

UWF will hit the final stretch of eight regular-season games on Thursday with a road contest at Auburn Montgomery at the AUM Gymnasium. The Argonauts are tied for sixth in the league. Their remaining schedule has four road games and four home games.

Thursday's game against AUM is set to begin at 8 p.m., immediately following the UWF-AUM women's contest.

ABOUT UWF
* UWF is 10-9 overall and 7-5 in Gulf South Conference play following their 61-49 win over West Alabama on Saturday.  
*Jon Brown leads the Argos in scoring (19.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg). Tarik Mckelphin is second on the team in scoring (10.1 ppg) and rebounding (5.1 rpg).
*Cameron Cox leads the team in assists (3.5 apg) while also contributing 6.8 ppg. Daniel Sofield is the Argos leading 3 point shooter with 41 total made threes while also being third on the team in scoring (8.1 ppg).
* UWF is 3-4 on the road this season, however, they were victorious in their last two road outings against Shorter and West Georgia..

LAST TIME OUT
* UWF turned in a dominating defensive performance and defeated West Alabama, 61-49, at the UWF Field House on Saturday.
* The Argonauts held the Tigers to season-lows in points and shooting – 22.8 percent – while ending their 4-game road winning streak. 
* The Argonauts shot 52 percent in the first half and 42 percent for the game. They were also 8-of-18 from outside and had 11 steals off 17 Tiger turnovers, which UWF turned into 20 points.
Jon Brown led all players with 20 points, while Conor Flanagan had three 3-pointers on his way to 11 points. Cameron Cox and Tarik McKelphin added 10 apiece.
* UWA led 17-12 before the Argos regained the lead with eight-straight, getting threes from Flanagan and Daniel Sofield and a jumper from McKelphin. The teams traded baskets until it was tied at 25. That's when UWF closed the half on a 9-0 run over the last 4:13 for a 34-25 lead. In the second half, UWA got the margin down to four in the opening minutes. But the Argos had an answer, rattling off 12-consecutive for a 46-30 lead. The Tigers never got closer than nine the rest of the game.
* UWA (14-5, 7-4) shot just 3-for-26 from outside. They were coming off a game against Montevallo where they had made 15 3-pointers and shot 61 percent overall.

ABOUT AUBURN MONTGOMERY
* AUM is 9-10 overall and 4-7 in Gulf South Conference play following their 95-83 defeat to Valdosta State on Saturday. 
* The Warhawks leading scorer is Carlos Bell (15.4 ppg) who is also second on the in rebounding (121 total). Darrion Taylor is their second-leading scorer (14.2 ppg) and leads the team in assists (66).
* Maharrith Jackson is their third-leading scorer (12.3 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (121).

UWF-AUM SERIES HISTORY
* The Argos are 6-2 overall against the Warhawks, including a 4-0 mark all-time in Montgomery.

UWF-AUM LAST WEEK IN PENSACOLA
* The teams faced each other last Thursday in Pensacola, with the Warhawks claiming a 73-66 win.
Tarik McKelphin scored a season-high 23 points to lead UWF. Jon Brown added 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
* The Argonauts closed to within two points early in the second half before AUM outscored UWF 16-4 to grab a 55-41 lead with 10 minutes to play. UWF was unable to get closer than five the rest of the game. 
* UWF shot 40 percent compared to 47 percent for AUM. The Warhawks outrebounded the Argos 37-34 and outscored them 36-28 in the paint. The loss snapped UWF's season-best four-game winning streak.
* Carlos Bell lead all scorers with 32 points on 11-of-15 shooting. Maharrith Jackson added 17.   

UWF TO HOST FREE YOUTH CLINIC FOR NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY
* The UWF Athletic Department will host a free youth clinic for girls 8th grade and under on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Noon in the HLS Recreation Center on the UWF campus. This free youth clinic is being conducted in collaboration with National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
* Participants will start the day with a proper warm up and stretch from UWF cross country team. Then the girls will rotate between stations of volleyball, tennis, golf, cross country and soccer. At each station they will receive instruction from each women's sports team and play games with the UWF student-athletes.
* All participants and their families will also receive free admission to the women's and men's basketball games against Shorter beginning at 2 pm and 4 pm that afternoon. During the women's basketball game, UWF will recognize the women's tennis and volleyball teams for their most recent Gulf South Conference Championships.
