MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UWF men's basketball team suffered through a second half scoring slump and fell to Auburn Montgomery, 72-66, at the AUM Gymnasium Thursday.
UWF led by a point at the half and then caught fire coming out of the break, scoring the first six points and building a 15-point lead with a 16-2 run in the opening 5:40.
The lead stayed in double digits through the midway point of the half. AUM then made a charge, putting together a 17-1 run for a 59-54 edge. The teams went back-and-forth for a few minutes before the Warhawks grabbed a 64-60 with 1:26 to play.
Cameron Cox missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and then AUM beat the shot clock with a Stanley Davis three from the corner for a 67-60 lead.
Tarik McKelphin answered with a quick three to trim the margin back to four. UWF got a stop on a turnover but then turned it over on a held ball tie-up. AUM took advantage and made three free throws to extend the lead to seven with 35 seconds left.
UWF was unable to get closer than six the rest of the way.
The Argonauts (10-10, 7-6 Gulf South) shot 36 percent and made 10 3-pointers. But the tough part to take was 16-for-26 at the free throw line.
Conor Flanagan led five players in double figure scoring with 19 points. Cox had 11 and McKelphin had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
AUM (10-11, 5-7) was led by Stanley's 21 off the bench. He was 4-of-10 from outside and made all seven of his free throws. The Warhawks were 18-of-19 at the stripe, with 14-of-15 coming in the final 13:30.
