CLINTON, Miss. –
Cameron Cox scored 14 of his career-high 25 in the second half as he led UWF to a 82-52 win over Mississippi College at A.E. Wood Coliseum on Saturday.
UWF only led by three at the half before putting on a man-to-man defensive clinic as the Argonauts outscored the Choctaws, 44-17, to win going away.
UWF (13-12, 10-8 Gulf South) held MC to 24 percent shooting in the second half and 34 percent for the day.
The Choctaws had closed to within three points 2:40 into the second period. UWF responded with an 11-0 run – getting seven from
Tarik Mckelphin – to spark a larger 20-4 stretch that saw them grab a 60-41 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
The Argos added another big run, outscoring the home squad 12-0 later in the frame before emptying the bench in the final minutes.
UWF shot 48 percent overall and was 9-of-16 from outside, getting three triples each from
Conor Flanagan,
Daniel Sofield and Brett Carter, Jr. Flanagan and Carter both had 12 points, with Flanagan grabbing a game-high 10 boards for his first career double-double.
In the second half, MC (8-15, 4-13) committed 11 turnovers that UWF converted into 12 points. The 52 points were the third fewest allowed by UWF this season.
The Argonauts also had 22 fast break points and got to the line with regularity, making 19-of-23 in the contest.
UWF maintained its sixth-place standing in the GSC regular-season race heading into the final games of the schedule. The Argos have two contests remaining and can finish anywhere from third to ninth. The top eight teams make the GSC postseason tournament and the top four will host a first round game.
The Argos will play their final two contests at the UWF Field House, beginning next Saturday against Montevallo at 4 p.m.
