UWF Hits the Road for West Alabama

Argos are 1-2 in GSC play

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team will make the trip to Livingston, Alabama, for a weekend series at West Alabama on Saturday and Sunday. UWF (8-5, 1-2 GSC) will look to keep its bats hot after a win over Spring Hill in Wednesday's home-opener, when the Argonauts scored a season-high 12 runs.
 
The series will start with a Saturday doubleheader, scheduled for a 2 pm first pitch. Sunday's 1 pm tilt will mark the series finale.

IN GSC PLAY
Conference play continues for UWF over the weekend, with the series at West Alabama. West Florida has been one of the best teams in the GSC over the last three years, holding a .705 winning percentage (67-28) and the second-most wins in the conference over that time, behind only Alabama Huntsville (70-27; .722). UWF also won its fourth GSC title last season -- its first since 2005.
 
Outfielder Teala Howard led the league in batting against conference opponents last year, hitting at a .438 clip, and Grace Gilbert and Kelsey Sweatt led the league in GSC wins with 10 each. Sweatt also ranked second in opponent batting average against GSC teams, at .205.
 
ABOUT WEST ALABAMA
At 4-8 overall, West Alabama most recently went 1-2 against Mississippi College to start GSC action. The Tigers went 1-4 at the Florida Tech Invitational two weeks ago, with close, one-run losses against Saint Leo, Florida Southern, and Florida Tech.
 
UWA has had a few offensive standouts to begin the season, in Abby McKee, Cassie Matlock, and Hayes Fulford. McKee has hit .412, Matlock is batting .345 with 10 hits and a double, and Fulford leads the Tigers with 7 runs scored and 6 RBIs.
 
West Florida has fared well against the Tigers in recent history, winning 12 matchups in a row and winning 17 of the last 18 against UWA.
 
AGAINST THE TIGERS
West Florida players have had a good deal of success against UWA in their careers. Grace Gilbert and Kelsey Sweatt have dominated in the circle, with Gilbert putting together a 1.17 ERA and a 2-0 career record. Sweatt threw a pair of shutouts against UWA last season, with 13 strikeouts over 14 innings.
 
Gilbert has also put together a solid batting line against UWA, hitting .400 with a pair of runs scored. Jacquelynne Poling has the most career at-bats against West Al, tallying two doubles and a home run and batting .417 (5-12). Teala Howard hit .636 (7-11) with a triple and three stolen bases over four games against UWA last year.
 
A LOOK AT LAST WEEK
UWF got off to a 1-2 start in conference play at Montevallo last weekend, but there were still positive takeaways from the weekend. The pitching staff combined for a 2.14 ERA and a .186 opponent batting average. Kelsey Sweatt put together a 0.95 ERA with 9 strikeouts over 7.1 innings, and Megan Warhurst allowed just one hit over 5.2 innings against the Falcons. Those two rank first (Warhurst; .056) and third (Sweatt; .083) in the GSC in opponent batting average in conference play. Warhurst also ranks ninth in Division II in hits allowed per seven innings (2.85).
 
Courtney McLellan led the team with 4 hits and a .400 batting average over the weekend, Madison Lanier went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in her first career start, and Grace Gilbert went 3-for-9 at the plate with 2 RBIs -- she now has a GSC-best 18 runs driven in this year.
