LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Florida baseball team used two big innings and an outstanding performance from starting pitcher
Daniel Floyd win the series finale over West Alabama 15-0 on Sunday afternoon. West Florida is now 6-6 on the year and holds a 4-2 mark in the Gulf South Conference, while UWA dropped to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
The scoring for UWF started with a sacrifice fly from
Justin Dunnam in the second inning to score
Miller Hancock, and that was all the run support Floyd needed.
The senior from nearby Chipley, Florida, threw seven innings and did not allow a run, while striking out four. UWA could muster just six hits against Floyd, three of which came in the second inning, and he retired eight of the final nine batters he faced.
West Florida put an eight-spot on the board in the sixth inning, starting with a two-run double down the right field line from Dunnam. Catcher
Trevor Payne then singled up the middle, bringing in Dunnam and
Brooks Mitchell, and second baseman
Adam Imwalle singled to right-center to score
Matthew Estrada.
A
Cullan O'Shea two-run triple and a West Alabama error brought in the final three runs of the inning, giving Floyd a 9-0 cushion.
It was more of the same for UWF in the eighth, and it began with a bases-loaded
Sam Harris walk. Mitchell then singled down the left field line to score two runs, Dunnam singled to score Harris, and Estrada singled to score Mitchell. Catcher
Riley White's grounder to short was misplayed and allowed Dunnam to score, finishing off the six-run eighth inning.
In all, UWF scored six runs on three hits, two errors, and three walks in the inning.
Estrada, Payne, Imwalle, O'Shea, Mitchell, and Dunnam each tallied two hits in the series finale, and Dunnam added a career-high four RBIs.
West Florida will be back home next weekend for a series against Delta State, on Saturday, February 29, and Sunday, March 1 at Jim Spooner Field.
