PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida baseball team was victorious over Delta State, defeating the Statesmen 6-4 to complete the weekend sweep. UWF's record now stands at 9-6 overall and 7-2 in the Gulf South Conference.
The Argos hand Delta State their first sweep in a three-game series since 2015 in their season opener against Nova Southeastern, and their first conference sweep since 2010 against Arkansas Tech.
Eric Keating started the game for the Argos and pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up one earned run while striking out nine. UWF's offense accumulated five hits and drew twelve walks on the day.
The Argonaut offense threatened early as they had the bases loaded with no outs in the first inning but after a strikeout, the Statesmen were able to turn two and get out of the inning.
UWF once again had the bases loaded in the second inning but this time Matthew Estrada hit a single down the left-field line scoring both Jack Copley and Justin Dunnam giving the Argos a 2-0 lead.
The bases-loaded streak continued for the Argos in the third inning and a balk by the Statesmen pitcher scored Cullan O'Shea making the score 3-0.
History once again repeated itself in the fourth inning as UWF had the bases loaded again as Brooks Mitchell was able to draw a walk scoring Dylan Menhennett. Dunnam followed that at-bat with a walk of his own scoring O'Shea. Copley was then hit by a pitch which increased the Argo lead to 6-0.
Chase Evans replaced Keating in the top of the seventh and was unable to retire a batter walking two, leaving the bases loaded. Brendan Case then came on in relief for Evans and gave up a 2 RBI single making the score 6-2.
Anthony Martens came in relief for Case and threw a wild pitch which allowed another Statesmen to score as the Argo lead was cut in half to 6-3. Martens was able to record a strikeout preventing any further damage from occurring.
Martens pitched a clean eighth inning throwing only six pitches. He was able to get out of trouble in the ninth as he loaded the bases with only one out.
Martens then got a Statesmen to hit a sac fly making the score 6-4. He finished off the game by fielding a weak grounder and throwing the runner out at first to complete the Argos sweep.
Keating picked up the win, improving his record to 3-2 and Martens earned his third save of the season.
UWF will be back at home tomorrow, as they will begin a two-game series against Nova Southeastern at Jim Spooner Field on Monday at 6 pm.
