PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida baseball team now stands at 11-8 overall and 8-3 in the Gulf South Conference after a split doubleheader against conference foe West Georgia on Saturday afternoon. UWF will have a chance to take the series win with a victory in the rubber-match on Sunday at 1 pm.
The victory in game one today for the Argos was a historic one as head coach Mike Jeffcoat picked up his 500th career win at the University of West Florida. He owns an overall record of 500-275 at UWF for a career winning percentage of .645.
GAME 1: UWF 8, WEST GEORGIA 2
The Argos' offense struck early in the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead in game one of the doubleheader. Senior Trevor Payne crushed a solo-homer to left field for the first run of the ballgame. Then later in the inning both Dylan Menhennett and Miller Hancock delivered in the clutch with two, two-out RBI singles.
West Georgia answered right back with two runs of their own in the top of the second, when Brady Barnes singled up the middle with the bases loaded scoring two on the play.
Cullan O'Shea had his third homer of the season in the fifth inning for the Argos, plating two more runs to make the game 5-2. Menhennett followed two batters later with a homer of his own with a solo-homer to left field for his first home run of 2020.
UWF wasn't done yet though as Hancock plated two more runs in the seventh off a single down the left field line. Hancock finished the day with 3 RBIs.
Daniel Floyd fresh off the GSC Pitcher of the Week award, recorded another strong start going seven innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits to earn the win in the game. He is now 4-0 to start the season. Floyd accumulated four strikeouts and issued one walk on 95 pitches today.
The three homers that the Argos hit in game one was the most they've had in a game all season, as UWF came into this game with only three home runs total all season.
GAME 2: UWF 0, WEST GEORGIA 1
Both teams were held scoreless until the tenth inning, when West Georgia's Brody Wortham homered to left field to give the Wolves their first lead of the day. The homer would end up being the difference maker as it was the only run scored in the game.
UWF had the potential winning run on second twice in extra innings, but were unable to bring them around to score.
Hunter Lucas went 6.1 scoreless innings allowing three hits and finished with five strikeouts. Freshman Anthony Martens pitched 3.2 IP and allowed the lone run in the game to get charged with the loss.
