PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF women's basketball made a season-high 12 3-pointers but suffered through a rough second quarter and fell to No. 18 Lee, 65-54, at the UWF Field House on Friday.
UWF (2-4, 2-4 Gulf South) shot 28 percent but stayed close with some timely shooting and another strong rebounding effort. The Argos secured a 40-36 edge on the glass and had 17 offensive rebounds they converted into 12 second-chance points.
Gabby Brown scored 14 and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Danielle Norquest had her second double-double in the last three games with 11 points and a game-high 12 boards, while
Charlotte Ellmore matched Norquest with 11 points.
Peyton Lewis came off the bench to score nine points on a career-high three triples. Norquest, Ellmore and Lewis all made three 3-pointers to lead the UWF outside attack.
UWF came out firing in the opening frame, making five 3-point field goals to end the quarter down by just a pair at 17-15. The Argos scored a minute into the second quarter but then hit a dry spell as they were outscored 18-0 as the Lady Flames built a 37-19 lead at the half. Lee took advantage of 10 UWF turnovers and scored seven points in creating the separation.
"I challenged the team at halftime to keep fighting but that you weren't going to get it all back at once so it would take some time," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We had a great effort and energy in the second half.
"We have some elements of the pistol offense and we started going to that and we were able to score more points. Eliminating the turnovers after half helped as well."
UWF took better control of the ball after the intermission, making just five turnovers while collecting eight steals on 12 Lee miscues.
The teams played an even third quarter before UWF closed to within 10 points in the fourth, outscoring Lee 15-8. The eight points were a season-low scored in a quarter by the Lady Flames.
Haley Schubert led Lee (6-2, 6-2) with 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Julia Duncan matched Schubert with four 3-pointers as she finished with 17. The Lady Flames shot 46 percent overall and were 11-of-24 from outside.
The same two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at UWF.
