PENSACOLA, Fla.

West Florida (2-5) is coming off consecutive road losses this past weekend at Lee.  Conor Flanagan was a bright spot for the Argos in the two contests, combining for 32 points, eight rebounds and five steals.  He set new career-highs in points (23), shooting 8-14 from the floor and 5-7 from beyond the arc, and steals (5) on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, respectively.  Wendell Matthews and Akili Vining provided a spark off the bench on Friday, combining for 25 points in Friday night's loss.  Matthews earned his first career start in Saturday's game.

Daniel Sofield added nine points on Saturday while freshman guard Kendall Bynum, scored a career-high six points in the game.

Tarik The Freak: Despite a tough weekend, senior guard Tarik Mckelphin stands in the top two on the squad in many categories including points per game (13.1), rebounds per game (8.3), minutes per contest (33.1), assists per game (2.7), and total points (92).  Tarik leads the team in total steals and blocks with 10 and eight, respectively.  Mckelphin is third in the GSC in rebounds per night, total rebounds (58) and is currently fourth in blocks per game (1.1).

Dan The Three-Point Man: Sofield, a sophomore from Jackson, New Jersey, has been a marksman from the outside early in the season.  His .474 three-point percentage is the best on the team and is the best mark in the GSC.  Daniel is also currently fifth-best in the conference in threes per game with 1.8 which is buoyed by his 6-7 night from the three-point line in a win against Auburn Montgomery, which tied him for the second best outing in program history, trailing only Sean Flynn who went 8-9 in a contest against Valdosta State in 1996.

The Big Fella From New Zealand: Flanagan, a 6-7 sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand, has been a consistent post presence in the Argos' seven games this season.  He is currently third on the team in points per game (11.6), second in three-point percentage (.382) and fourth in minutes per contest (25.1).  Flanagan also had four straight games in double-figures in scoring, dating back to January ninth against AUM, where he scored 15 points and culminating with Friday's night match-up with Lee.

The Matthews and Vining Duo:  Matthews and Vining have been key for the Argos off the bench this season.  Vinings' 7.3 points per game leads all Argos off the bench, with his best game coming Friday night, tallying 15 points on 6-8 shooting.  Akili, a transfer from Mclennan CC also put up 12 points earlier in the year against AUM on January 5th.  Matthews, meanwhile has been an equally big addition for North Iowa Area CC.  His 8.8 points are fourth-best on the squad, to go along with his .485 shooting percentage (second-best) and team-leading .785 free-throw percentage.

Scouting Montevallo:   UM (1-0), is led by head coach Danny Young in his 18th season with the team.  Young is 351-184 in his 18 years, making him the winningest coach in program history, acculumating Conference Coach of the Year honors five different times between the GSC and the Peach Belt Conference.  His Falcons have not played since December 9th due to GSC COVID-19 protocols.  In their December 9th victory over West Georgia, Xavier Malcolm led the way with 22 points and five rebounds on 6-14 shooting from beyond the arc.  Travarus "Bob" Carroll, a newcomer to watch by the GSC, pitched in 14 points and added a team-high 12 rebounds and five assists.

Series History:   All-time, the Argonauts are 6-18 against Montevallo, with the teams splitting their two contests last season.  In UWF's 69-64 victory at the UWF Field House last season, West Florida got 19 points from Conor Flanagan and 10 points off the bench from Brett Carter Jr. off the bench.  The Argos are seeking their second victory all-time at Montevallo, with their sole victory coming on February 23, 2019 by a final of 69-66.
