PENSACOLA, Fla.- The UWF Men's Basketball will look to snap a five-game skid as they host Shorter on Friday and Saturday at the UWF Field House. Tip-off on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's contest will start at 3 p.m.
UWF (2-6), is coming off a three-game road trip where they faced Lee in a two-game series and Montevallo in a single-game. Guard
Tarik Mckelphin recorded his fourth double-double of this season with 20 points and 13 rebounds in the game at Montevallo with forward
Wendell Matthews also adding 18 points and six rebounds on a season-best 60 percent shooting.
Guards
Daniel Sofield and
Kendall Bynum chipped in 11 and eight points, respectively. The eight points for Bynum were a career-high in 15 minutes off the bench.
Tarik The Freak: Mckelphin, averaging 14 points per game, is having a standout season for the Argonauts. He is first on the team in rebounds per game (8.9), total rebounds (71), field goal attempts (93), steals (11) and blocks (8). Tarik is in the top 10 in the Gulf South Conference in rebounds, blocks, field goal percentage (.495), blocks and steals as well. On December 15th 2020, Mckelphin became the first Argo since
Darryl Tucker in 2017, to be crowned as GSC Player of the Week as he recorded 32 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Lee.
Dan The Three-Point Man: Sofield, a sophomore from Jackson, New Jersey, has been a sharpshooter from beyond the arc this season. Daniel is currently first on the team with a .435 three-point field goal percentage on a team-high 46 attempts. He has shot over 40 percent in three different games, including a 6-7 output on January 9th against Auburn Montgomery, tying him for second all-time in program history for three-point field goal percentage in a single game. Sofield is fifth in the GSC in three-point field goal percentage and field goals made per game (2.5).
Flanagan & Matthews; A Frontcourt Presence: Matthews, earning his first minutes in game three of the season, has been a force down low along with Flanagan, as the two have made for a deadly frontcourt duo. Wendell, a transfer from North Iowa Area CC, is averaging 10.3 points and 4.3 rebounds this season on a team-high .521 field goal percentage. He has scored in double-figures in three games, recording 16 against West Georgia, 10 against Lee and 18 on Tuesday night at Montevallo. Flanagan, a sophomore from New Zealand, has shown he is comfortable with another body down low as he is thrived in the increased playing time with Matthews alongside of him.
Conor has scored in double figures in four of the six games that Matthews has played, including a 23-point effort in a contest against Lee on Friday, January 22. In the two games since, in which Matthews has been inserted into the starting line-up, Flanagan has responded well putting up nine points in each game and tallying a season-high seven rebounds against Montevallo.
UWF Limiting Home Attendance in January: As a reminder, the University of West Florida is limiting attendance for January 2021 home men's and women's basketball games to immediate family members of UWF student-athletes and coaches. Visiting teams will be permitted a pre-approved guest pass list. Face coverings and at least six feet of social distancing will be required inside the UWF Field House by spectators and staff. Fans will not be allowed on the court at any time, including pre-and post-game. All other COVID-19 visitor compliance guidelines must be followed. All UWF home games will be video streamed for free on the UWF Sports Network at www.GoArgos.com. Home games will also be aired by UWF's television's partner, Cox Sports Television.
Scouting Shorter: The Hawks (1-6), are led by coach Wade Anderson who is in his fourth season with the program. Shorter is a coming off a two-game sweep at the hands of Valdosta State, with guard Charles Botchway scoring in double-figures in both contests. Botchway, averaging 18.3 points per game, is the fifth leading scorer in the GSC, as he is shooting almost 48 percent from the field and leading the team with 40 total assists. SU relies on two other guards, Ricky Knight Jr. and Kelan Walker, as they both average over 10.7 points per contest.
Series History: All-time, the Argonauts are 10-6 against the Hawks, with UWF winning the last eight match-ups between the two programs. West Florida won both games last season, including a 86-66 decision at the UWF Field House behind 13 points from
Cameron Cox and 21 from Brett Carter Jr. off the bench, with 15 coming from the three-point line. UWF holds a 5-3 advantage all-time at the UWF Field House.
