Game Notes
PENSACOLA, Fla.- Following a 23-day break, the UWF Men's Basketball team returns to action for a home match-up with Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday night at the UWF Field House. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 pm.
The last time we saw the Argonauts (1-0, 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference), the team fed off an up-tempo, fast-paced attack to defeat Lee, 79-66, on December 12th. Â
Senior guard
Tarik Mckelphin paced West Florida with 32 points and 10 rebounds while fellor senior,
Brett Carter Jr., added 12 points to be the only other Argo in double figures.Â
Daniel Sofield and
Cameron Cox chipped in nine and eight points, respectively to secure the win.
UWF also won the battle on the boards by a total of 46-44, with Sofield leading the team in rebounds with 11. Freshman
Michael Maumbe had a big impact in his first game with the program as he collected four boards in 15 minutes.
Four other Argos saw their first action for the blue and white with
Tate Mulkey,
Akili Vining,
Najeem Nawabi and
Kendall Bynum, collecting minutes. Mulkey led all newcomers with 6 points while Vining pitched in 2 points of his own.
Tarik the Freak: Mckelphin's 32 points in the victory over Lee was the highest-scoring output by an Argo since
Darryl Tucker's 33 point scoring outburst on February 1st, 2018. A native of Plant City, Florida, Mckelphin currently ranks second in the NCAA in scoring with 32 points per game while he is tied for first with three blocks per game. Even more impressively, Tarik is tied for first in the Gulf South Conference in points, rebounds and blocks per contest. He was also named the GSC East Player of the Week for his effort, the first Argonaut to do so since Tucker in 2017.
Scouting Auburn Montgomery: AUM comes into the game at 0-2 with both losses coming against GSC foe, Valdosta State, this past weekend. Freshman Sam Youngblood has had a quick start to his career as he averaged 14.5 points in the two games against the Blazers, including a 23-point performance in the first match-up. Youngblood leads the conference in field-goal percentage as he is shooting nearly 63 percent. The Warhawks also rely on two seniors, Maharrith Jackson and Jeremiah Bozeman, to provide offense as they come into Tuesday's contest averaging 13 and 11 points, respectively. AUM was picked to finish sixth in the GSC East Pre-Season Poll.
Series History: All-time, the Argos lead the series 6-3, which includes a 3-2 mark at the UWF Field House. Last season, AUM got the better of the Argonauts, taking both contests including a 73-66 decision in mid-January, despite Mckelphin and Cox combining for 34 points to lead UWF.
