Men's Hoops Set To Host AUM For Second Time In Five Days On Saturday

Forward Daniel Sofield led all Argos with 18 points on Tuesday night

- For the second time in 5 days, the UWF men's basketball program will Auburn Montgomery at the UWF Field House on Saturday night.

West Florida (1-1) stumbled to an 81-72 loss in the team's last match-up on January 5th despite 42 points from Argonaut guards Daniel Sofield, Cameron Cox and Akili Vining.  Sofield lead all UWF players with 18 points which included 4-10 shooting from downtown.  Vining made the most of his extended play in only his second game with the team as he put in 12 points in 20 minutes of game action.

The Argos were unable to keep AUM (1-2) away from the charity stripe and off the boards as the Warhawks made 31 free-throws and won the rebounding battle 48-36 despite UWF guard Tarik Mckelphin's game-high 14 rebounds.

Mckelphin also chipped in eight points and a team-high six assists to keep West Florida in the game before Auburn Montgomery pulled away late in the contest.

Tarik The Freak: Mckelphin, a 6-4 senior guard from Plant City, Florida, has been a swiss army knife for the Argos, leading the team in points (20), rebounds (12), assists (4.5),  minutes (35), and blocks (2) per game.  He currently ranks sixth in the Gulf South Conference in scoring, tied for first in rebounds, fifth in assists, second in blocks and eighth in minutes per contest.  The senior is also second in the nation in rebounds.

Backcourt Leading The Way: This season, it's all about the guards.  Mckelphin, along with Cox, Vining, Sofield and Brett Carter Jr. have accounted for nearly 75 percent of the team's scoring output with the five scoring 56.5 points per game between them.  In their two games, West Florida has got equal contributions from all five of the players with Mckelphin and Carter Jr. combining for 42 points in the Argos' first game while Cox, Vining and Sofield accounted for 42 points in their second contest.

Scouting AUM: Michael Cheaney is in his seventh season at the helm for Auburn Montgomery.  Last time out, AUM was able to stifle UWF in the team's last match-up behind four Warhawks finishing the game in double-figures.  Jeremiah Bozeman and Maharrith Jackson had 39 of the Warhawk's 81 points as the two were able to connect on 25 free throws combined.  Freshman Sam Youngblood went for 15 and another starter, Stanley Davis, had 10 points.  Youngblood became the first Warhawk to be named as the GSC Freshman of the Week when he won the award on January 5th, after scoring 14.5 points per game in AUM's first two games of the season against Valdosta State.

Limited Attendance For All of January: In their continued effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, University of West Florida Athletics will continue to limit attendance for 2021 January home men's and women's basketball games to immediate family members of UWF student-athletes and coaches.  Visiting teams will be permitted a pre-approved guest pass list.  Face coverings and at least six feet of social distancing will be required inside the UWF Field House by spectators and staff.  Fans will not be allowed on the court at any time, including pre- and post game.  All other COVID-19 visitor compliance guidelines must be followed.
