PENSACOLA, Fla. – After extending their win streak to 14 straight matches this past Saturday, the University of West Florida Volleyball team will be put right back to the test on Tuesday when they take on Alabama Huntsville for the second time in a week.
After winning in four sets this past Tuesday from Huntsville, the No. 15 ranked Argonauts are now 19-1 on the season, including a perfect 7-0 mark in Gulf South Conference play. This 19-1 mark matches West Florida's best start in program history, tying the 19-1 mark achieved in the 2003 season.
Tuesday's match against Alabama Huntsville will also be "Pack the Field House" night where gift cards will be handed out to the largest group at the match as well as the most spirited fan.
About West Florida: Off to one of their best starts in program history, West Florida will look to keep their momentum rolling on Tuesday night when they take on Alabama Huntsville for the second time in three matches.
Backed by one of the best offenses in the conference and arguably the nation, the Argonauts currently rank first in the GSC in kills, hitting percentage, and assists.
Middle blocker
Veresia Yon has been a key contributor to this offensive efficiency this season as she leads the team with 209 kills, 274.5 points, and a .469 hitting percentage. This dominance was seen once again this past week as she averaged 3.43 kills per set, 4.64 points per set, and a .462 hitting percentage over the Argonauts two matches.
Setter
Taylor Vaneekeren has been the maestro of West Florida offense this season setting the ball to all positions on the court to allow our hitters great opportunities to score. Already with 668 assists on the season, Vaneekeren currently ranks seventh in the nation in total assists while ranking first in the GSC in assists per set.
Defensively, the Argonauts show very few weaknesses as well ranking first in the conference in blocks, opponent kills, opponent hitting percentage, and opponent assists. This defensive effort is backed by a strong blocking front which features five players who have already picked up 30 or more blocks on the season including a team-high 92 blocks from Yon.
Around the country, West Florida currently ranks top five in assists per set, blocks per set, hitting percentage, kills per set, team assists, team kills, and total blocks.
About Alabama Huntsville: After falling to the Argonauts last Tuesday for their first conference loss of the season, the 11-5 (5-1) Chargers will look for revenge on Tuesday when they square off with West Florida once again.
Ranking second in the conference in blocks and aces while placing third in digs, Alabama Huntsville will put up a strong defense force every night while having long service runs with their great serving abilities.
Outside hitter Molly Presnell is still leading the offensive charge for AUH as she has picked up 143 kills on the season for an average of 2.65 per set. This offensive attack includes a 14 kill outing the last time these two teams faced off of an impressive .303 hitting percentage.
Shayla Libby holds down Libero duties for the Chargers and has averaged over four digs per set on the season. Between Libby and Alabama Huntsville's blocking presence, the Chargers cause many problems for most teams defensively.
