PENSACOLA, Fla. – In what will be their final weekend of conference play before the regional crossover, the University of West Florida Volleyball team will once again be put to the test taking on both Lee and Shorter on the road.
This weekend's matches will also mark the final matchup's before the Argonauts head to Winter Haven, Florida to take part in the Regional Crossover where they will square off with three of the top teams from the Sunshine State Conference.
About West Florida: Winners of their past 15 matches, the Argonauts are looking for two more wins this weekend to extend their win streak and head into the regional crossover on a high note.
Leaders in many national and conference categories, West Florida has been running a very efficient offense this season which causes their opponents defense many headaches.
Outside
Madi Cooler has jumped right back to the high level of play we saw from her in the early weeks of the season leading the team in kills in their past two matches. This recent success includes an 18 kill performance this past Tuesday against Alabama Huntsville which added to her team leading kill per set and point per set totals.
Veresia Yon has been another big hitter on this Argonaut offense as she currently leads the team in kills, points, hitting percentage, and blocks on the season. A leader in many national categories as well, Yon currently ranks within the top five of the country in blocks per set, hitting percentage, and total blocks.
Setter
Taylor Vaneekeren has elevated her game to a whole new level this season setting the ball to all the positions on the court very effectively. Currently averaging 10.59 assists per set, Vaneekeren ranks first in the conference in assists per set and No. 29 in the nation.
Still tabbed as one of the best blocking teams in the nation, West Florida currently ranks within the top ten of the country in blocks per set, total blocks, and opponent hitting percentage.
About Lee: With an overall record of 5-10 on the season including a 3-4 mark in conference play, the Lady Flames are looking to continue their recent momentum of Friday after picking up a big win over West Georgia on Tuesday.
Offensively, Emma Flowers and Allie Whittinghill have been a dynamic duo for the Lady Flames this season. Each already with over 180 points on the season, Flowers leads the team in points per set and kills per set while Whittinghill leads the team in total points and total kills.
Another player to keep an eye on this Friday is outside hitter Lyssi Snouffer who currently has 117 kills on the season including a 19 kill outing against Valdosta State three matches ago.
Defensively, Lee has a lot of capable ball handlers as four players currently have 100 or more digs on the season. In the blocking game, Scottie Cook leads the charge with 32 blocks on the season for an average of 0.63 blocks per set.
About Shorter: Currently the only other team unbeaten in conference play, the Hawks will enter Saturday's match with a 14-4 record overall including a 7-0 mark in GSC play.
Backed by three strong hitters on the offensive side of the ball, Shorter can attack opponents from all areas on the court and present a difficult team to matchup with.
Junior Lacee Glover has really spearheaded this offensive attack for the Hawks as she currently leads the team in points and kills. Also ranking as one of the top hitters in the conference, Glover's 3.91 points per set average this season rank her fourth in the conference.
Annie Veldhuis and Carrington Terrell are the other two players to look out for on this Shorter offense as they each have 80 or more kills on the season and over 100 points as well.
On the defensive side of the ball, Madison Sprosty has done well as the Hawks libero placing sixth in the conference with her 4.33 digs per set average. Blocking is another area of success for Shorter as Terrell ranks second in the GSC in blocks per set averaging 1.30 blocks per set.
Schedule for the Weekend: Action is set to begin Friday at 5 pm (CST) from Paul Dana Walker Arena in Cleveland, Tennessee. Then on Saturday, first serve will be at 1pm (CST) in Rome, Georgia as the Argonauts take on Shorter.
