Pensacola, Fla.- West Florida defeated GSC opponent, Shorter 4-2 this afternoon to end homecoming week and senior day. This improves the Argos record to 6-2-2 and 3-2-1 on GSC play.
Seniors,
Jihad Gomes,
Gabriel Arraes, and
Ed Chappe were recognized this afternoon for their accomplishments during their time at UWF. In addition to their many individual accomplishments, these players led the 2019 Argos to their 10
th GSC Final in 13 years, to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament and to final national ranking of 21
st.
West Florida kicked off the first half with an impressive goal in the first minute of play by forward Sy Fontenot off a fast break. The assist was handed to midfielder
Rafael Filho.
Possessions went back and forth between both teams in the first half. The goal by Fontenot was the only goal scored in the first half. There weren't many shots taken in the first half. Shorter only had four shots in the first half while the Argos had only six shots.
Starting the second half, the Argos had majority offensive possessions. In the 53
rd minute,
Kainan Dos Santos kicked the ball into the back of the net to increase the Argos lead to two. Two assists were given to
Keegan Lynch and
Keegan Ancelin. Not even a minute later, another goal was scored by
Kainan Dos Santos off a fast break pass by
Jack Patching. This improved the Argos lead to three.
The Hawks started to make a comeback in the 67
th minute with a goal by Davide Maiello and then again in the 70
th minute, the goal was credited to Davide Maiello. The Hawks were able to score off a fast break and outnumbered the Argos in the box.
In the 72
nd minute,
Kainan Dos Santos was set up to kick a penalty kick because of a foul in the box. Dos Santos was able to slip it past the goalkeeper and the shot went into the right corner of the net. This made the score 4-2.
In the last eighteen minutes, The Argos were able to hold onto their lead to defeat the Hawks on senior day. West Florida had ten shots in the second half and sixteen total shots.
Kainan Dos Santos had an extraordinary night with three goals to make it a hat trick for the Argos. He now leads the Argo offense with eight goals.
Up Next: West Florida will travel to Birmingham, Ala. to play West Alabama on Thursday, Oct. 21 and Alabama Huntsville on Saturday, Oct. 23. These two games got cancelled earlier in the season because of weather conditions.
