PENSACOLA, Fla. – Days after coming off of tying their highest ranking in program history, the No. 10 ranked University of West Florida Volleyball team will be back up against some of the best teams in the south region from the GSC/SSC Regional Crossover in Winter Haven, Florida.
Featuring 36 matches in the span of two days from the AdventHealth Fieldhouse, this year's Regional Crossover sees the Argonauts square off with Florida Southern, Lynn, and No. 17 Nova Southeastern over their Friday and Saturday schedule.
Action is set to kick off on Friday at 3:45 pm (CST) against Florida Southern before returning Saturday to face Lynn at 11:15 am (CST) and Nova Southeastern at 6 pm (CST).
About West Florida: Coming in tied with Tampa as the highest ranked team at the Regional Crossover, the now 22-1 Argonauts will look to make a statement this weekend and secure their first wins from this event since the 2017 season.
As arguably one of the top offenses and defensive teams in the nation, West Florida enters this weekend firing on all cylinders winning a program record 17 straight matches after starting the season 5-1.
Loaded with hitting talent, the Argonauts have seen huge minutes from the likes of
Tyler Fezzey,
Madi Cooler, and
Veresia Yon who all currently rank within the top ten in the conference in kills per set and points per set. This success has helped the Argonaut team to being ranked within the top ten of the nation in many categories including kills per set, team kills, and hitting percentage.
This offensive success isn't all to do with the hitters though as Junior setter
Taylor Vaneekeren has really elevated her game this season and has set up these hitters with great opportunities all around the court. Currently ranked first in the conference and twentieth in the nation in assists per set, Vaneekeren has led the Argonauts to being ranked No. 3 in the nation in assists per set as well as team assists after a great start to the year.
Not just a fierce attacking team, West Florida also has a strong blocking game, currently leading the nation in total team blocks while ranking second in blocks per set. This efficiency is largely thanks to Yon's efficiency from her middle blocker position where she already has 101 blocks on the season which ranks her third in the nation in total blocks.
About Florida Southern: Coming in as the fifth seed in the SSC, the Mocs have had an up and down year to start the season and currently sit at 9-6 to start the season. However, don't let this record fool you as Florida Southern has proven to be quite dangerous at times this season handing No. 17 Nova Southeastern their lone loss of the season a few weeks ago.
Behind the attacking power of Mackenzie Petermann, the Mocs have looked explosive at times on offense causing opponents to search for answers. Averaging 4.18 points per set along with 3.70 kills per set, Petermann is one of four Florida Southern players to total over 100 points to this point in the season.
Senior Beatrice Formilan has done a great job for the Mocs on defense this season averaging over five digs per set from her libero position. In addition to Formilan's presence in the back row, Florida Southern also presents teams with some interesting looks in their blocking game with Tierra Porter leading the charge with 49 blocks on the season.
About Lynn: The Fighting Knights enter the weekend as one of the hottest teams in the tournament having won their past five matches. Sitting at 11-7 overall on the season, Lynn has dropped some very close matches to some of the top teams in the nation and present a tough test to whoever they play.
Paced offensively by outside Nadia Lindner, the outside hitter has led the team in kills this season with 204 as well as kills per set where she averages 3.14 kills per set. Sonja Udovcic has been another dominant force for Lynn on offense this season leading the team in points behind a strong attacking and blocking presence.
Ruth Zijlstra currently leads the Fighting Knights in digs averaging 4.21 digs per set on the season. In addition to her presence, Lynn also sits second in the conference in blocks per set averaging well over two blocks per set as a team.
About Nova Southeastern: Ranked No. 17 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, the Sharks enter the Regional Crossover as the top seeded team from the SSC after a dominant start to their season. Sitting at 15-1 overall, Nova Southeastern's lone loss this season came to conference foe Florida Southern in a five set showdown earlier in the month.
Sitting atop their conference in hitting percentage, assists, kills, and aces, the Sharks run one of the premier offenses in all of Division II volleyball.
Outside Elizabeth Price has led the charge on offense so far this season for Nova Southeastern pacing the team in kills, kills per set, and points on the year. Averaging 3.43 kills per set over the Sharks 16 matches, Price has recorded double-digit kills in ten matches this season including a season high 20 kills against Pittsburg State earlier in the year.
On the defensive side, Preslee Brooksbank has served as a reliable libero for the Sharks averaging 4.21 digs per set on the season. Her efforts as well as the strong blocking efforts of Nova Southeastern have limited opponents this season to just 9.28 kills per set on a .161 hitting percentage.
Schedule for the Weekend: With all 36 matches this weekend being played from the AdventHealth Fieldhouse in Winter Haven, Florida, it is sure to be a weekend full of volleyball action from sunup to sundown.
For the Argonauts, their first match will be against Florida Southern at 3:45 pm (CST) before taking on Lynn Saturday at 11:15 am (CST) and Nova Southeastern at 6:00 pm (CST) on Saturday as well.
