CLEVELAND, Miss- With a late surge in the second half the University of West Florida Women's Soccer team secured a 1-1 draw with the Lady Statesmen in Friday's conference matchup. UWF is now 9-2-1 and 5-2-2 in Gulf South Conference action.
During the first half of the match the Argos got off to a slow start with just two shots. Defensively UWF and DSU applied pressure limiting opportunities for either team to score. However, in the 35th minute Delta States Robyn Moody scored to put the Lady Statesmen ahead 1-0, with an assist from Mia Ramirez. The Argos were outshot by the Lady Statesmen 5-2 in the first half, with each team having two corner kicks.
In the second half of the match the Argonauts came back, finding ways to get deep into DSU territory. During the second half of the match the Argos were able to take six shots and four corner kicks. The Lady Statesmen were held to four shots with three corner kicks. The Argos came back late in the second half when freshman
Julia Comin scored an unassisted goal in the 84th minute.
Regulation ended with both teams attempting to increase the momentum to avoid overtime, however at the conclusion of 90 minutes the scored was all tied at 1-1.
During the first overtime UWF came out strong, winning the ball on multiple occasions. Delta States defense was relentless in their efforts to stall the Argonaut offense. In the second overtime Delta State was able to take one shot, with UWF defenders
Kileigh Whited and
Hannah Wooten stalling any action that reached the backfield.
Goalkeeper
Charline Favier ended the match playing a total of 45 minutes in the first half, allowing one goal with one save. Goalkeeper
Mackenzie Montague also saw action playing a total of 65 minutes during the second half and both overtimes, picking up 2 saves and not allowing any goals.
Next up the team will head to Clinton, Miss., to face the Mississippi College Choctaws on Sunday, Oct.31 at 1 P.M
