PENSACOLA, Fla- On Thursday evening the University of West Florida Women's Soccer team came up short against the Lee Lady Flames in the Gulf South Conference Semifinals. The Lady Flames scored midway through the second half making the score 1-0.
Throughout the first half West Florida was dominant on both sides of the ball. UWF outshot Lee 6-4, during the first half of the game and had one corner kick. Defensively the Argos were aggressive with Lee who came into the match averaging four goals a game. The Argos defense was able to keep Lee out of scoring territory, majority of the first half, with the Lady Flames only being able to take four shots.Â
Offensively West Florida played aggressively across the field taking six shots. Lee goalkeeper Jackie Burns had five saves in the first half to stall the Argos effort.Â
In the second half both teams came out strong and played tough defensive across the field. In the 73rd minute however, Lauren Weimer scored the Lady Flames lone goal with an assist from Katie Dirske.Â
The Argos would get multiple shots on goals in the second half but were unable to land one in the back of the net. Overall UWF outshot Lee 16-7, a season low for the Lady Flames. 12 of UWF's shots were on goal. Forward
Blair Cowan led the team in shots with five, followed by
Destiny Hird with four ,Â
Destiny Hammac and
Brianna Pope each with two.
Ahnalie Layman,
Kileigh Whited,
Bailey Erwig and
Charline Favier each had one shot on the night.Â
UWF goalkeeper
Charline Favier finished the night with four saves. Lee's goalkeeper had 11 saves.Â
Although West Florida's run at a conference title came to an end the team will await their seeding for the NCAA South Regional Tournament. The selection show will take place on Monday, Nov.15 at 6 p.m ET.Â
