West Florida Men's Soccer Advances to GSC Championship on PK's

The Argos advance 3-1 on penalty kicks

Pensacola, Fla.- West Florida defeats a tough AUM team in the Gulf South Conference Semifinals to advance to the GSC Championship. Both teams were scoreless after double overtime, so the winner had to be determined by penalty kicks. The Argonauts were able to advance 3-1 in penalty kicks.

This matchup was a hard-fought battle between both teams from the beginning. In the first half, the Argos had a difficult time connecting offensively. The Argos were able to have good looks at the net by Ed Chappe, Kainan Dos Santos, and Austin Marshick. The Argos were limited to five shots in the first half.

The Argo backline, which has been solid all year, held the Warhawks to only four shots in the first half.

The Argonauts had six corner kicks to AUM's five corner kicks. Going into halftime, both teams remained scoreless.

Coming out of halftime, the Warhawks came out more aggressive offensively with a header by Jabari Broussard in the 62nd minute, but it was saved by UWF goalkeeper Jihad Gomes. The Argo backline was able to stop any Warhawk accolade in the second half.

Late in the second half, West Florida was able to have a few looks at the net by Eduardo Quieroz, who had a great shot in the 79th minute, but it was saved by the Warhawks goalkeeper, Alexander Kraus.

At the end of regulation, West Florida outshot AUM 13-12. Both teams ended up scoreless in double overtime.

After being scoreless in 110 minutes of play, both teams headed into penalty kicks to decide who advances to the GSC Championship.

 The Argos were up first in penalty kicks with a shot made by captain Ed Chappe. The Warhawks forward Guilherme Bittencourt was up first for AUM, but he missed high over the net.

Next up, midfielder Caue Novaes made the second penalty kick for the Argos. AUM midfielder Amaud Baron made the Warhawk's second penalty kick in the back of the net. The Argos had the 2-1 lead. Lucas Barankiewicz was up next for UWF, but the shot was snagged by the AUM goalkeeper.

Philip Spickenhaum was the third player to kick for AUM, but his shot hit the crossbar of the goal. UWF midfielder Eduardo Quieroz made the shot into the back of the net for the Argos to increase the margin 3-1.

Charlie Elliott was the fourth kicker for AUM to decide the outcome of the game. Elliott's shot went right and was stopped by the Argo goalkeeper Jihad Gomes.

The Argos won 3-1 in penalty kicks with an amazing save by Gomes to advance West Florida to the GSC final.

With a 0-0 draw against AUM, this brings the UWF record to 11-3-3 on the year.

Up Next: The Argos will face No. 4 Lee University in the GSC Championship game at 12 PM on Sunday at Ashton Brosnaham Park.
