PENSACOLA, Fla. – In what a been a dominant regular season full of memories and records, the University of West Florida Volleyball team will embark in their final regular season match of the year this Saturday when they take on Auburn Montgomery in Montgomery, Alabama.
Ranked No. 7 in the nation in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll as well as No. 1 in the NCAA South Regional Rankings, the Argonauts are looking for a strong finish to the regular season on Saturday as well as in the GSC Tournament next weekend to secure a home court advantage for the South Regionals.
Saturday's match will also hold big implications for the Warhawks as they are still looking to lock up a birth into the upcoming GSC Tournament and improve their seeding within the conference's standings.
About West Florida: The Argonauts enter Saturday's matchup with a 30-1 record overall including a perfect 15-0 mark in Gulf South Conference play. In addition to this impressive record, West Florida has also won 25 consecutive matches on the season which is an ongoing program record.
As one of the most well-rounded teams in the nation, the Argonauts rank within the top ten of the nation in many team categories and have three hitters and a setter who all rank at the top or near the top of the conference in many categories.
One of these players is
Madi Cooler who is coming off of her third GSC Offensive Player of the Week Award of the season this past week. The Junior outside hitter currently leads the team in points per set (4.29) and kills per set (3.89) while ranking first in the conference in kills per set and second in the conference in points per set.
Middle blocker
Veresia Yon has also been playing at a very dominant level this season coming up big both offensively and defensively this season. As another three-time GSC Offensive Player of the Week recipient, Yon currently ranks within the top ten of the conference in kills per set (3.29), hitting percentage (.487), points per set (4.21), and blocks per set (1.27).
Tyler Fezzey has led the charge from the right side this season as she is another hitter for the Argonauts who ranks within the top ten of the conference in hitting percentage (.364), kills per set (3.07), and points per set (3.44). As a graduate transfer, Fezzey ranks third on the team in total points (292.0) and total kills (261) just behind Yon and Cooler.
Running this dominant offense all season has been Junior setter
Taylor Vaneekeren who has brought her game to a new level this season. Totaling 1,083 assists already on the season, Vaneekeren ranks second in the nation in total assists as well as 19
th in the nation in assists per set and is the top-ranking setter within the conference.
In total, West Florida as a team currently ranks within the top ten of the nation in assists per set, blocks per set, hitting percentage, kills per set, opponent hitting percentage, team assists, team kills, and total team blocks.
About Auburn Montgomery: The Warhawks currently sit with a 16-12 record overall including a 7-5 mark in Gulf South Conference play with a clash with Valdosta State later today before Saturday's meeting with the Argonauts.
Led by an offense with three strong hitters similar to West Florida, Auburn Montgomery presents many challenges to opposing defenses and can play with the best of them when they are all firing on all cylinders.
Nyah Whittlesey is one of these powerful offensive weapons for the Warhawks as the senior outside currently leads the team in total blocks and total kills on the season. These numbers include 11 double-digit kill performances on the season including two in the Warhawks past three matches.
The other two offensive cornerstones for Auburn Montgomery include Carla Butler and Keren Santana who each have over 200 kills and points on the season alongside Whittlesey. These three help the Warhawks to be ranked second in the conference in kills per set averaging 12.77 as a team this season.
Defensively, Butler has handled duties this season as the Warhawks primary libero. The senior from Christchurch, New Zealand has not only averaged nearly three digs per set this season but has also picked up 24 blocks and as was evident earlier is averaging over two kills per set this season as well.
