PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF's inside duo of
Jaclyn Jarnot and
Zoe Piller dominated the paint with a combined 49 points as the Argonauts defeated Pensacola Christian, 81-56, at the Horton Sports Center Friday.
Jarnot set a career high with 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting and notched her second-consecutive double-double with 12 rebounds. Piller also collected a second-straight double-double as she ended with 24 and 13, while making 9 of her final 11 field goal attempts.
"We were able to isolate the post players against some smaller defenders," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "Tonight was a great game by two solid basketball teams. It was a good game and both teams played hard and rebounded hard."
UWF (2-1) shot 44 percent and held a 54-36 rebounding margin.
Fanny Hulmi had eight points off the bench and
Jenna Gallimore hit a pair of 3-pointers to get into the scoring column for the first time in her freshman season.
"Our bench did enough to help out," Yelton said. "It was nice to see
Jenna Gallimore came in and hit a couple of threes."
The Argos did an excellent job on Lauran Alvarez, holding her to nine points and 10 boards, well below her averages of 19.4 points and 17.4 rebounds. Sandy McElhaney had 22 to lead the Eagles.
PCC (4-2) shot 30 percent overall but just 9-of-30 from inside the 3-point line. They did make 10 triples.
UWF will return to action on Sunday when it faces Spring Hill at the UWF Field House at 6 p.m. It will be the home-opener for the Argos.
