West Florida Comes Up Short Against Georgia College

PENSACOLA, Fla- The UWF Men's Basketball came up short against the Georgia College Bobcats 81-77. UWF is now 5-1 on the season. Wendell Matthews led the team with  18 points and secured his second double double of the season with 10 rebounds. 

During the first half UWF struggled to make shots shooting 12-32 from the field, just 37.5 percent. Defensively the Argos were unable to stop the Bobcats who were 14-33 from the field, shooting 42.4 percent. Georgia College led by 10 at halftime after knocking down eight three-pointers. The Bobcats had 26 rebounds in the first half and had 10 second chance points. 

The second half of the game was much more balanced for the Argos as they improved their shooting. From the field UWF was 18-35 shooting 51.4 percent. Daniel Sofield made three three-pointers to help the Argos. Sofield finished the night with 14 points. Wendell Matthews was 7-18 from the field and finished the night with 18 points and 10 rebounds. 

Defensively, the Argos played more aggressive during the second half and were able to rebound the ball well. Jejuan Weatherspoon had a team high 11 rebounds. Weatherspoon also had 13 points, securing a double double. 

The key difference in the Argos coming up short was the Bobcats ability to make three-pointers and rebound. Georgia College finished the game with 16 three-pointers and 47 rebounds. Georgia College was 16-37 from the three-point line, shooting 43.2 percent. Overall the Bobcats were 29-67 shooting 43.3 percent from the field. The Bobcats were led in scoring by Zyair Geene who had 23 points and led the team with six three pointers. 

Overall UWF outshot the GC 44.8 percent to 43.3 percent. UWF had 36 rebounds and scored 14 points off of Bobcat turnovers. Four Argos finished the night in double figures, Matthews led with 18, Sofield had 14, Weatherspoon with  13 and LaTrell Tate rounded out the double figure scoring with 11 points. 

Up next the University of West Florida Men's Basketball team will have their first conference game of the season on the road against the University of West Georgia. The game is set for Wednesday, Dec.1, with a 5:30 p.m. tip.
