Pensacola, Fla.- After beating a tough No.6 Christian Brothers team, the No. 3 Argonauts advance to the next round of playoffs.
West Florida defeats the Buccaneers 4-2 in the first round of playoffs. The Argonauts move to 11-3-2 on the season and earn a spot in Friday's Gulf South Conference tournament semifinal while CBU drops to 9-6-2 on the year.
The GSC announced the GSC All-Conference team on Saturday. West Florida had three first team all-conference players which included
Keegan Ancelin,
Ed Chappe, and
Kainan Dos Santos. Ancelin was also named GSC Freshman of the Year.
The Argos came out aggressive offensively in the first half with good touches by GSC All-Conference senior captain
Ed Chappe and forward
Kainan Dos Santos.
The Buccaneers got on the board first with an unassisted goal by forward Habib Binate in the 13
th minute. Just ten minutes later,
Keegan Ancelin scored off a beautiful pass by
Kainan Dos Santos to tie the score up at one.
Two minutes later, the Argos score off a counterattack. The goal was given to GSC Freshman of the Year,
Keegan Ancelin. The assist was given to once again,
Kainan Dos Santos. The Argos took the lead in the 26
th minute.
Both teams remained scoreless the rest of the half. The Argos outshot the Buccaneers 13-11.
Senior goalkeeper
Jihad Gomes was once again big in the net with three saves.
In the 57
th minute, defender
Austin Marshick headed the ball into the net for his first goal of the season and to increase the Argo lead to two. Dos Santos gave Marshick the assist.
Kainan Dos Santos would have a very impressive game. Dos Santos scored his first goal of the afternoon from a corner kick by
Ed Chappe in the 67
th minute. This gave the Argos a 4-1 lead.
Kainan Dos Santos accumulated three assists against CBU.
The Buccaneers would come back with a goal by midfielder Ryan Beckinsale to cut the Argo lead in half in the 80
th minute.
The Argonaut defense would hold off the Buccaneer renegade the rest of the second half. West Florida was mostly solid defensively to limit CBU to only 11 shots. CBU would have nine shots in the second half
Up Next: West Florida will have a few days of preparation before their GSC semifinal matchup on Friday, Nov. 12. The matchup will be played at Ashton Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Fla. Time and opponent to be determined.
