CLEVELAND, Tenn. –
Zoe Piller scored the game-tying free throw with 19 seconds left and the game-winning basket with 8.5 remaining to help lead UWF to a 76-72 road win over No. 19 Lee at Paul Dana Walker Arena on Saturday.
The freshman from Nolensville, Tennessee finished with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting and eight rebounds for the Argonauts. She had 16 in the second half and made 8-for-10 at the free throw line over 15 minutes.
"We knew it was going to a great game and Lee is a great opponent with multiple scorers," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We knew we had to hunker-down defensively and make them work as hard as possible. It was one of our better free throw nights and when you end up shooting 43 percent from the floor, good things will probably happen.
"I'm proud of the poise that our team showed down the stretch. At one point in the second half I had to call a timeout to challenge our players to get them to step up in the moment and they did, which always makes you happy as a coach."
UWF (7-1, 2-0 Gulf South) shot 43 percent and was 18-for-21 at the line as the squad won at Lee for the second time in the last three meetings, and their second-straight overall.
The game had 23 lead changes and eight ties. The last of those ties came on a Piller's free throw with 19 tics and the last lead change was her turnaround shot from the block 11 seconds later following a
Fanny Hulmi offensive rebound. UWF had 14 offensive caroms and turned those into a 14-4 difference in second-chance points.
Maddie Griffon had 14 points and four assists.
Charlotte Ellmore tied her career-high with four 3-pointers, including two in the final minute of the first half that gave UWF a lead before Lee beat the buzzer to grab a 35-34 edge going into the locker room.
Gabby Brown's nine points in the first half – she finished with 11 – were key for the Argos.
Jaclyn Jarnot had nine points and a game-highs of 14 rebounds and three steals.
Lee (8-2, 1-2) shot 46 percent and was led by Haley Schubert with 18 points, five boards and seven assists. Three Lady Flames had 14 points, including Julia Duncan who scored 12 in the final quarter.
Neither team led by more than six points the entire game. Lee led 52-46 with 2:13 to play in the third before UWF went on an 11-0 run to go ahead 57-52 with just under nine minutes in the contest.
UWF will return to action on Monday night at Shorter (1-4, 0-3). Tip-off at the Winthrop-King Centre in Rome, Georgia is at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
