PENSACOLA, Fla.
- The UWF Men's Basketball team will be looking to climb the Gulf South Conference standings this weekend, as they play host to GSC opponent, Montevallo, on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

Tip-off from the UWF Field House is set for 6:30 p.m on Friday and 3 p.m on Saturday.  Friday night will mark the first of three contests between the two teams as they will again meet on Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:30 pm at Trustmark Arena in Montevallo, Alabama.

West Florida (4-8, 4-8 in the GSC) is 2-2 in their last four contests.  Forward Daniel Sofield leads the squad with 15.8 points per game, after he scored 25 and 17 points, respectively, in a two-game set last weekend at West Georgia.  On the year, the sophomore from Jackson, New Jersey, is averaging 4.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 32.9 minutes per contest as he has started all 12 contests.  Guard Tarik Mckelphin also had himself another solid two-game trip with 19 points, seven boards, three assists and two blocks in game one, followed by 10 points, five rebounds and one block in the second game on Saturday.  Fellow guard, Akili Vining, had his best game in an Argonaut uniform on Saturday, with 17 points off the bench.

Swiss Army Knife, Tarik Mckelphin: Mckelphin has been everywhere on the floor for the Argos this season, as he is currently leading the team in rebounds per game (8.4), field goal percentage (.528), minutes per contest (34) ,field goals made (76), steals (15) and blocks (15).  Mckelphin also is in a tie for most points in a game in the GSC this season with 33, field goals made (14) and rebounds (14).  Tarik is also leading the conference in total rebounds with 101 and he also stands in the top 10 of the conference in points per game, rebounds per game, field goal percentage and blocks per contest.

The Sharpshooter from New Jersey: Sofield, a product of Jackson Liberty High School, has been lethal from beyond the arc this season.  His .449 three-point percentage paces the team, along with 31 three-pointer field goals made.  His .449 percentage also leads the GSC along with his 2.6 three-point field goals per contest, good enough for fifth in the GSC.  Earlier in January, Sofield went 6-7 from downtown in a contest against Auburn Montgomery, tying him for second in program history for three-point field goal percentage in a game.

Vining Making An Impact Off The Bench: Vining, a guard from Crowley, Texas has been a major key off the bench this season for UWF.  The junior guard is fifth on the squad in points per game, shooting 40 percent from the field and connecting on 74 percent of his free throws.  He is also fifth on the team in steals.  The Crowley, Texas native has also led the team in points off the bench in five of the 10 games the Argos have played in 2020-21.

Scouting Montevallo: Head Coach Danny Young, who is in his 18th season with the program, leads the Falcons (4-4, 4-4 in the GSC).  UM comes into the game, dropping their last two games, one against GSC East leading Valdosta State and one against West Georgia on Tuesday night.  James McNeil leads all scorers with 14.1 points per contest, with fellow guard Xavier Macolm, just behind him 13.8 points per game.  The Falcons have four other players who average double-figures in scoring in Travarus "Bob" Carroll, Caleb Coleman, Braxton Bertolette and Mason Shifflett.

Series History: Overall, the Argonauts are 6-19 all-time against the Falcons, which includes a 5-5 mark at the UWF Field House.  As mentioned above, the Argonauts narrowly lost the lone match-up between the two schools earlier in the year by a final of 80-77 at Montevallo.  Mckelphin had 20 points and 13 rebounds, with Wendell Matthews adding 18 points for UWF while Xavier Malcolm had 21 points for UM, to lead all scorers in the contest.
