MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The UWF women's basketball team raced out to an early lead on the road at Montevallo, but was unable to hang on, falling 62-57 at Trustmark Arena on Friday.

UWF blistered the nets in the first quarter, making 9-of-12 on its way to a 20-10 lead. The strong play continued in the second quarter, as the Argonauts took their largest lead of the game into the locker room, 39-19.

But coming out of the intermission, the Falcons cut into the margin by scoring the first 13 points in the quarter. UM eventually tied it at 44 going into the final 10 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, with the score knotted at 53, UM got a jumper from Kourtnie Smith and a 3-pointer from Savannah Lee for a 58-53 edge with 2:16 to play. The teams traded scoring opportunities for the next 90 seconds before each team got a layup, making the score 60-55 Falcons with 38 seconds remaining. From there, UM made a basket and UWF got a pair of free throws to close out the scoring.

UWF (7-7, 7-7 Gulf South) shot 40 percent in the game but committed 24 turnovers.

Danielle Norquest had her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Peyton Lewis was the team's leading scorer with 16 points and four 3-pointers.

UM (9-4, 9-4) shot just 32 percent in the contest but received 34 points in the paint and held a 44-40 rebounding edge. Lee had a game-high 17 points while Jordan Jones added 16 .

The same teams will face off again on Saturday at 2 p.m.
