Box Score
PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF outfielder
Joey Wozniak saw an opportunity and he delivered.
The red-shirt sophomore came on as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the eighth, and promptly delivered a 1-1 pitch deep out of left field, driving in three runs and giving the UWF Baseball Team a 12-2 win over Shorter at the friendly confines of Jim Spooner Field on Saturday night, in the process.
West Florida improves to 4-0 on the year with the victory while Shorter drops to 2-2.
Nine different Argonauts contributed to the blue and green's season-high 18 hits and 12 runs while the Argo pitching staff continues to excel, allowing only six hits, no walks while striking out 12.
"These guys have made it easy for me to call the game with all the depth we have in the line-up", UWF Head Coach
Mike Jeffcoat stated. "It is always a good thing when you are looking at the 7-8-9 hole in the line-up and they can produce just as much as the top and the middle of the order. It really comes down to the guys being unselfish because there are multiple guys who could easily be hitting higher in the line-up. Everybody has to share the load and just pass the baton to the next guy."
The Argos got to work early as the lead-off batter,
Justin Dunnam, opened the game with a double to right-center field. Three batters later, first baseman
Cullan O'Shea, singled up the middle to give UWF a 1-0 lead. O'Shea would score immediately as the next batter,
Jack Copley, doubled to left center. Copley finished the contest going 5 for 5 from the plate, with two runs scored and two runs scored.Â
UWF would tack on another run in the bottom of the third when outfielder
Matthew Estrada got things started with a one out single. Following a walk by O'Shea and single by Copley, Estrada would score on an RBI groundout by shortstop
Miller Hancock.
Three runs would be all the run support that UWF starting pitcher
Ryan Brewer would need, as the right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out eight to earn the win. Brewer gave up the two runs in the top of the fourth on a solo shot by Hawks' catcher Nathaniel Buttersworth, and in the sixth when Buttersworth singled home, Josh Pajer.
"
Ryan Brewer gave us another great start and I have been really pleased with him", Coach Jeffcoat said. "
Josh Pahlad was great again in his two innings of work and we are very confident in the combination.
Pahlad picked up right where Brewer left as the Kissimmee, Florida native threw two shutout innings, allowing one hit while striking out four to earn his second save in as many appearances. In six innings this season, Pahlad has struck out 10 batters and only allowed four hits.
Following two scoreless innings, UWF's offense would strike again in the seventh inning as catcher
Jack Schad would walk with the bases loaded to score O'Shea and make it 5-2. Copley would score on the next at-bat as
Bryant Harris Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
With one out in the eighth, Estrada would single up the middle. After advancing on a wild pitch, O'Shea singled through the right side to score Estrada. Two batters later,
Sam Clement coming in at catcher due to a pinch-runner, singled to center field to score O'Shea who had advanced on a Copley single. Harris Jr. in the next at-bat would single through the left side, scoring Copley with Clement advancing to third on an error by the left fielder to put runners on first and third, setting up Wozniak's walk-off home run.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow with a double-header beginning at 1 p.m from Jim Spooner Field. Pitchers
Evan Floyd and
Tyler Dowdy are expected to start for the Argonauts.
