Argonauts Take Series Over Delta State with Game Three Victory

UWF scores three runs in extra innings to take the win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida Baseball team used a three-run 10th inning to defeat Delta State, 7-6, in Game 3 of a three-game set to win the series.

UWF moves to 6-3 with the victory while the Statesmen drop to 2-4.

Four different Argos had at least one run batted in during the contest, with left fielder Justin Dunnam contributing three of his own. Dylan Menhennett had two RBIs, while Miller Hancock and Cullan O'Shea had one apiece.

Dunnam, Menhennett and O'Shea were three of the four Argonauts who had at least two-hits as the team racked up 12 total hits on the afternoon.  UWF is now tied for third in the Gulf South Conference in hits with 97 through nine contests.

Menhennett got the West Florida offense started the offense early, driving in third baseman True Fontenot to make it 1-0 in the top of the first after Fontenot had advanced to third on an error by DSU starting pitcher, Jackson Rutledge.

The Statesmen would strike back in the second to score two runs off of Argonaut starting pitcher, Tyler Dowdy.  A single from DSU catcher Donovan Shows scored Patrick Hodges, with Myles Christian coming home in the next at-bat on a wild pitch.

UWF came back in the top of the third inning to make it 3-2 and re-take the lead.  Following a Matt Estrada single to load the bases, Menhennett walked to load the bases.  With the bases still loaded, Dunnam followed in the next at-bat with a line-out to left field, to score Fontenot.

Dowdy would allow one more run in the bottom of the fourth on a Christian single, but overall Dowdy pitched well.  Making his third career start, the freshman from Plant City, Florida, finished with five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, with two walks and three strikeouts, to earn the no-decision.  Dowdy struck out Kirkland Trahan to end the fifth inning, recording his 10th strikeout of the season.

Delta State regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Hayden White doubled down the left field line off of Josh Pahlad, scoring Will Myers who entered as a pinch-runner. Pahlad, coming in relief of Dowdy, pitched two innings, allowing one run (unearned), on one hit with one strikeout.  It was also the first run given up by Pahlad in nine innings of relief this year.

O'Shea would get the Argonauts back on track in the top of the eighth as he led the inning off with a double to left center. A single from Menhennett put runners on first and third, and Dunnam dropped a sacrifice bunt to score O'Shea and tie the game.

Joey Wozniak took the mound in the eighth and threw two hitless innings of relief in the eighth and ninth, getting four strikeouts and helping UWF reach extra innings.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to begin the 10th, O'Shea doubled down the right field line to score Matthew Estrada and give West Florida the 5-4 lead. Dunnam and Miller Hancock added back-to-back RBI base hits to stretch the lead to 7-4.

After DSU scored on a sacrifice fly from Jake Barlow, head coach Mike Jeffcoat brought in Brendon Case to hold the two-run lead with runners on second and third. Case delivered – he got flyouts from Myles Christian, which brought in one run, and Kade Dees to end the game and give UWF the 7-6 victory.

It was Case's second save of the year, and he leads UWF's qualified pitchers with a .167 opponent batting average.
