Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla.
- The University of West Florida Baseball Team received a solid outing from starting pitcher Evan Floyd, along with timely hitting from their offense to defeat Alabama Huntsville, 9-2 on Sunday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field.

With the win, UWF took two out of three in the series to improve to 8-4 on the season.  UAH drops to 5-8 overall and 5-7 in the Gulf South Conference with the loss.

Floyd was in control from the first pitch of the ballgame, setting down the Chargers in order in the bottom of the first.  That would be a theme for Floyd, as he put down UAH in order two other times, during his five innings of work.  The Pensacola native only got into trouble once, as he faced a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third, before he induced an inning-ending double play as third baseman True Fontenot fielded a grounded ball, touched third base on his own and then threw to first for the out.

For the contest, Floyd went five innings, allowing no runs one hit, while striking out three batters on an efficient 58 pitches to earn the win.  The right-hander played to his defense, six fly-outs and five ground-outs.  On the year, Evan now sits at 2-0 with an earned run average of 1.71, which is second best in the GSC.

After being shut down in the first two innings, the UWF bats woke up as Bryant Harris Jr. reached after being hit by a pitch.  After Cullan O'Shea reached on a fielding error, outfielder Dylan Menhennett came through with a two-out single up the middle against UAH pitcher, Heath Senn, who took the loss.

Following three pitching changes for UAH, West Florida would strike again for four more runs in the top of the fourth on back-to-back two out hits by Menhennett and Justin Dunnam, pushing the lead to 5-0.  Menhennett and Dunnam both had three RBI's on the day.  Dunnam is now first on the team in RBI's with 13.

UWF would score again in the fifth inning as catcher Jack Schad opened the frame with a walk.  After advancing to second and third on a Miller Hancock sacrifice bunt and a single by Sam Harris, Schad would come around to score on a sacrifice bunt from Fontenot to make it 6-0.

Menhennett added to the lead in the top of the sixth as he singled home O'Shea after he doubled down the right field line to open the frame off of Parker Henson.  The Argonauts would close out their scoring in the top of the eighth as Freshman Jason Roberts singled through the right side to score Menhennett and Fontenot from second and third off of Parker Warren, giving Roberts his first two RBI's of his career.  UAH used 11 total pitchers for the game.

Tyler Dowdy would come in for Floyd in the bottom of the sixth for Floyd, going three innings and allowing two runs on six hits.  The Freshman gave up a run each, in the seventh and eighth innings but was able to escape greater damage as he induced two inning-ending double plays.  In the bottom of the seventh, he got Will Acuff to line-out to Sam Harris at second-base who then threw to O'Shea to double up the Charger runner with the bases loaded.  Dowdy then induced a ground-out to Miller Hancock to end the threat in the bottom of the eighth.

Brendon Case came on in the ninth for UWF, allowing one walk and one hit, before getting Zach Duvall to pop out to catcher Sam Clement, who had come in as a defensive replacement for Schad, to end the game.

The Argonauts will be back in action next Friday and Saturday as they host Mississippi College on March 5th and 6th.  First pitch for Friday night is slated for 6 p.m. while Saturday's double-header will begin at 1 p.m. from Jim Spooner Field.
