Late Surge Carries UWF Past Mississippi College

Argonauts score six runs combined in sixth and eighth inning

Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla.
- Ryan Brewer had another solid start while the Argonaut offense scored a combined six runs in two of the final three innings to lift the UWF Baseball Team past Mississippi College, 7-3, on Friday night at Jim Spooner Field.

The win moves West Florida to 9-4 on the year while MC drops to 3-7 overall and 0-7 in the Gulf South Conference.

Brewer, a junior from Apopka, Florida, was study in his fifth start this season.  Throwing six innings, Brewer allowed one run on eight hits, while walking four and striking out six.  With the win, Ryan moves to 4-0 on the year which puts him atop the GSC in wins.

Brewer received early run support in the bottom of the first as the Argonaut bats went to work.  Third baseman, True Fontenot, led the game off with a double to left-center.  Following a hit-by-pitch by Matt Estrada, Cullan O'Shea ripped a single to right field to score Fontenot and put UWF up 1-0.

The Choctaws would strike back with a home-run to left by Caleb Reese, evening the game at one apiece.  From there, it was a pitcher's duel as Brewer and lefty, Bryce Lewis, went toe-to-toe for the next five innings of play.  Fighting through trouble, Brewer would consistently work himself out of it as he finished three straight innings by stranding a MC runner at third base.

Brewer closed his night by striking out the final two batters he faced in the top of the sixth.  With the one run allowed, Brewer lowered his season earned run average to 2.64, good enough for seventh in the GSC.  The right-hander is now also second in the conference in innings pitched (30.2) and eighth in strikeouts (26).

After a tough five innings, the Argo hitters were able to finally solve Lewis in the bottom of the sixth.  Fontenot led off the inning with a walk and then found himself on second base after a groundout by Matthew Estrada.  Two batters later, outfielder Dylan Menhennett singled the first pitch he saw, up the middle to give UWF a 2-1 advantage.  It was Menhennett's 13 run batted in of 2021, tying him with Justin Dunnam for the team lead.  Menhennett would advance to second on a failed pick-off attempt and later score on a single by the designated hitter, Jason Roberts.

Joey Wozniak would replace Brewer to start the seventh, and despite giving up a run in the seventh, Wozniak did his job in his 2.1 innings.  During his time on the mound, Wozniak allowed two runs on three hits, while walking two batters and recording one strikeout.

Following a one, two, three-inning by Wozniak, the UWF offense struck again for four more in the bottom of the eighth.  After a one-out double down the right-field line by Roberts, catcher Mike Scordo unloaded on a 1-1 pitch to put it in the left field seats for his first-career home run.  Adam Imwalle, making his first start of the year, doubled to deep center field to keep the inning going, with Imwalle later scoring on an RBI single by Fontenot.  Fontenot, Imwalle and Roberts each had two hits on the night to lead UWF.

In a wild sequence, Fontenot would later come around to score as he stole second base and then scored off of two throwing errors by Mississippi College, to make it 7-2.

The Choctaws would get a run back off Wozniak to open the ninth, before UWF Head Coach Mike Jeffcoat brought in closer, Brendon Case, to earn the final two outs of the night.  Case, striking out the final two batters of the contest, picked up his GSC leading fourth save of the season in the victory.

The teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon with a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. from Jim Spooner Field.  Evan Floyd and Tyler Dowdy are expected to start on the mound in games two and three of the series for West Florida.
