PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF Men's Basketball Team will look to build on their two-game winning streak as they head to Carrollton, Georgia to take on Gulf South Conference foe, West Georgia, on Friday and Saturday.
Tip-off from the Coliseum is slated for 6 p.m. ET on Friday while Saturday's game will begin at 2 p.m. ET.
UWF (4-6) is coming off their two highest-scoring performances of the season as they swept Shorter last weekend. The first game of the weekend slate saw the Argos post 101 points, the most by a GSC team in 2020-21, and it was the first time UWF scored 100 since February 25th, 2017. The 56 points in the first half was also the highest point total in the first half of any contest in Head Coach Jeff
Burkhamer's six years with the program.
Tarik Mckelphin had the best game of his career with 33 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and four steals on 14-19 shooting, while Daniel
Sofield finished with 20 points in only 20 minutes of game action, connecting on 4-5 from beyond the arc. The 33 points were tied for 11th most in school history.
Conor Flanagan and
Akili Vining added 10 and 11 points respectively, as the Argos finished with a season-high 37 field goals and 12 three-pointers. In Saturday's action, Brett Carter Jr. came off the bench to score 18 points, with three other Argonauts finishing in double-figures, headlined by Wendell Matthew's 17, as UWF put on another offensive clinic, winning 88-71. UWF connected on 30-39 free throws in the second match-up, their best performance of the year.
GSC Player of the Week, Tarik Mckelphin: Following a week in which he averaged 21.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and three assists per game,
Mckelphin was named GSC East Player of the Week for the second time this season. To go along with his historic performance on January 29th against Shorter,
Tarik also had 20 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in a tight loss at
Montevallo and had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks in the second game against the Hawks.
Mckelphin has arguably been the best player in the East division this season, as he has the two highest-scoring games in the conference, with his 33 points against Shorter and 32 against Lee on December 12th. The native of Plant City, Florida, also has the most field goals in a game (14), rebounds (14) is tied for second most blocks in a contest (3) and is leading the league in rebounds per game (8.9). He was also awarded as the East Player of the Week on December 15th, after a 32 point, 10 rebound performance in a win over Lee.
The Sharpshooter from New Jersey:
Sofield, a native of Jackson, New Jersey, has been electric from beyond the arc this season. He is first on the team in three-point percentage (.456) and three-point field goals (26). Currently second on the team in scoring (14.8), minutes (32.2) and steals (13), he is also second in the GSC in three-point percentage and is fifth in threes per game with 2.6. Daniel hit 6-7 threes in a win over Auburn Montgomery on January 9th, the highest percentage by an Argo since Sean Flynn went 8-9 in a game on February 24th, 1996.
Flanagan and Matthews, A Post-Presence: The Argos have received great play from their men in the middle this season with Flanagan and Matthews being stalwarts down low. Flanagan, a sophomore from New Zealand, has been able to consistently hit from inside and outside as he is averaging 10.8 points per game, which includes a 38 percent mark from beyond the arc. Both Flanagan and Matthews have thrived since Wendell was inserted into the starting line-up on January 23rd with the former averaging nearly 10 points in the four games since, with the latter having his two-highest scoring contests, including a 18 point-outburst against
Montevallo on January 26th. Matthews, a product of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, was critical in the second game against Shorter as he put the Hawks in foul trouble early, going to the free-throw line often, making 11 of his 12 attempts en route to 17 points. The 11 free-throws made were the third-most in a game by a GSC player this season.
Scouting West Georgia: The Wolves (3-6) are led by Dave Moore, who is in his third season with the program. UWG is coming off a road split against
Valdosta State, as they scored a season-high 87 points in their win on January 29th. Averaging 71.7 points per game this season, seventh best in the GSC, West Georgia relies on guards
Kadeim Jones and Michael
Zabetakis to ignite the offense as both players average over 14 points per game on the year. Jones and
Zabetakis led the way in their win over VSU, with the former scoring 25 points on 8-16 shooting in 40 minutes, while the latter had 20 points and six rebounds in 35 minutes of
gametime.
Series History: All-time, UWG holds a narrow 18-17 advantage in games between the two programs. The teams have met once this season, on January 16th, with the Wolves pulling away in the second half to escape the UWF Field House with a 84-76 victory, despite five Argos being in double-figures including Daniel
Sofield who finished with a team-high 17 points. That night, the Wolves got 25 from
Zabetakis, 20 from guard, Deng
Nhial, and 16 points from
Kadeim Jones.
UWF is 5-11 at the Coliseum in Carrollton, as the Argos won last season's match-up, 67-53, as
Mckelphin and
Sofield combined for 28 points and 14 rebounds.
