PENSACOLA, Fla.- The University of West Florida got off to a strong start in the 2021 season, defeating Gulf South Conference foe West Alabama by a final of 8-2 on Friday night at Jim Spooner Field.
"The guys really came ready to play", said UWF Head Coach
Mike Jeffcoat. "We had the one big inning in the third where we scored seven runs and although we would like to be able to be a little more consistent and spread the runs out a little, we'll take the big inning."
West Alabama got on the board first, as Taylor Clemmons singled through the left side, scoring Trenton Lee. UWF pitcher
Ryan Brewer would settle down though as he struck out the next two batters to escape the jam. The two strikeouts started a run as Brewer went on to retire the next 11 batters.
On the night, the Apopka native went five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out five batters to get the win. "I'm really happy with Brewer", said Jeffcoat. "He got into some deep counts but he got us through five innings and certainly
Josh Pahlad went four innings and held strong."
Pahlad came in relief of Brewer and tossed four strong innings of his own. The native of Kissimmee, Florida, struck out six and only allowed three hits in his time on the mound, earning a save in the process.
The Argo bats woke up in the third inning as they scored seven runs on six hits in the inning, highlighted by a three-run double by first baseman
Cullan O'Shea.Â
Miller Hancock started off the inning with a double to right-center, one of two he had in the frame. Second baseman
True Fontenot followed with a bunt single, moving Hancock to third, setting up a sac bunt from graduate student
Justin Dunnam.
Following walks by
Dylan Menhennett and
Matthew Estrada, O'Shea unloaded on a 3-0 fastball to right-center to break the tie and put the Argos in front for good. O'Shea would score on a sac fly by the next batter,
Bryant Harris Jr., with Hancock delivering the final two RBI's of the inning, driving in
Jack Schad and
Jack Copley. All the runs were charged against West Alabama starter, Peyton Warren, who went five innings in the loss.
O'Shea, Schad and Hancock all had two hits for the Argos with O'Shea leading the team in RBI's with three.
West Florida would get on the board one more time in the eighth as Estrada would score on a Tiger error.
The Argonauts and the Tigers will meet again tomorrow for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
Evan Floyd and
Tyler Dowdy are scheduled to make their first starts for UWF tomorrow, with Javian Stone and Connor Brooks throwing for the opposition.
