Game 1 | Game 2
PENSACOLA, Fla.- The UWF Baseball Team got dominant outings from their pitching staff, combined with timely hitting to win 4-3 and 10-0 on Sunday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field, earning a sweep over the West Alabama Tigers. West Florida now stands at 3-0 and UWA drops to 0-3 on the young season.
Miller Hancock led all Argos with five hits in the two contests while
Bryant Harris Jr. and
Dylan Menhennett both hit home runs, with Harris Jr. having a four-bagger in game one while Menhennett hit an opposite-field blast in the first inning of game two.
Game 1: Starter
Evan Floyd fed off the performance by
Ryan Brewer who got the call-in last night's season-opener, as Floyd threw five innings of his own. The Pensacola native allowed only two runs on five hits, striking out six and allowing no walks. The two runs followed Brewer, who also allowed two runs in his start on Friday night.
The Argonaut offense did their work early in the game, scoring four runs in the first four innings. Harris Jr.'s solo homer in the second to left field broke the seal. Hancock, the next batter, would single and then steal second base, advancing to third on an error by the Tiger catcher. Hancock would later score on a balk, making it 2-0 West Florida.
UWF would strike again in the fourth as
Sam Clement, getting his first start of the season behind the plate, singled to right with two outs, moving Hancock to third. After
Justin Dunnam was hit by a pitch, Menhennett stepped to the plate and delivered a strike to right field, scoring Clement and Hancock, and earning a double. That was the first of three extra-base hits on the afternoon for Menhennett.
West Alabama would bounce back in the top of the fifth as Jonathan Thibodeau, hit a two-run single right up the middle against the Floyd, driving UWF Head Coach
Mike Jeffcoat to bring in
Hunter Lucas in the sixth, with the Argos clinging to a 4-2 advantage.
Lucas did the job, going three innings, striking out four batters while only allowing three hits. One of those hits came in the ninth inning as Gavin Rodgers, a pinch hitter for UWA, launched a solo shot to center field to make it 4-3 game. Red-shirt sophomore
Brendon Case relieved Lucas in the save opportunity and after walking the first batter he faced, Case struck the next two batters he faced, before Clement sealed the game by throwing out Jacolbey Hawthorne at second.
Hancock, Menhennett and Clement all had two hits in the first game for UWF, with Menhennett also driving in a team-leading two RBI's.
Matthew Estrada drew two walks for the Argos.
Game 2: UWF got their best performance of the weekend in game two of the double-header as the hosts got a dominant starting performance from Freshman
Tyler Dowdy on the mound, while four different Argonauts drove in at least a run, including Dunnam who had three RBI's of his own.
Dowdy shook off a slow start, to go seven innings, striking out five and only allowing three baserunners on the night. Two of those baserunners came in the first inning.
From there on, the freshman from Plant City, Florida cruised as he only allowed one more baserunner, on a Nick Sims single in the top of the third. After the single, Dowdy retired the last 15 batters he faced, mixing in three strikeouts in the process. Dowdy only allowed one walk, and used his defense well as he induced eight fly-outs and eight groundouts on only 74 pitches.
Alex Knight came in for the top of the eighth inning, allowing one hit and one walk, before getting a groundout and flyout to escape any damage in the appearance.
Dowdy was the beneficiary of an offensive explosion by his offense as the Argos put up runs in five different innings. Menhennett started the action with a homer to right field in the two hole.
Harris Jr. walked to open the second inning, with a
Jack Schad single up the middle to put runners on first and second with no outs. Hancock singled to load the bases, with the next batter,
True Fontenot driving in Harris Jr. on a sacrifice fly to center field. Dunnam would follow with a single to left to score Schad, with Hancock scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Menhennett and Estrada scoring on a error by the defense to make it a 5-0 game through two innings.
The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth inning as Dunnam scored on a wild pitch before Estrada drove in Menhennett on a groundout to second base. Menhennett hit the second of his two doubles earlier in the inning on an 0-1 count.
After two runs in the seventh inning, UWF capped off the night on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Dunnam in the bottom of the eighth, scoring
Sam Harris Jr. who came in to pinch run for Schad.
Next up, the UWF Baseball Team will return home for a mid-week contest against Spring Hill on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch from Jim Spooner Field is set for 3 p.m.
