MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UWF women's basketball team didn't mess around on defense, holding Auburn Montgomery to 30 percent shooting in a 70-46 road win at the AUM Gymnasium on Tuesday.
The win stretched the UWF (7-6, 7-6 Gulf South) win streak to three games overall and was its sixth-consecutive over the Warhawks in Montgomery.
UWF finished with 42 percent shooting and made seven 3-pointers – four in the first half – to build the early lead. The Argonauts dominated glass with a 52-23 rebounding margin, including 17 on the offensive end that they converted into 11 points.
Peyton Lewis led UWF with 13 points, scoring all of those in the second quarter during the game-changing 16-4 run that tilted a 15-9 UWF lead into a 31-13 edge before the half.
"Her teammates were able to find her in good shooting rhythm and she knocked down the shots," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "Once she got out of a lot of the protocols that always seemed to get her in the fall, she's been one of those players that can get better in a quick period of time and that's what she's shown the past few weeks."
Lewis has reached double figures in six-straight and made multiple 3-pointers in six of the last eight games.
The Warhawks threatened briefly in the third quarter when they scored five straight to get within 14. But UWF answered out of a timeout with an 11-3 run – highlighted by a
Fanny Hulmi three and six points from
Amara Newsom – to stake a 57-35 lead after three.
D'Asia Collins ran the offense to perfection, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Hulmi was equally impressive with a dozen points on 5-of-8 shooting with two treys, five boards, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
UWF also got 25 points from its bench on Tuesday.
UWF never let AUM (0-7, 0-7) get comfortable offensively, holding them to six baskets in the first half. Leading scorer Jordan Brewster entered the game averaging 14 points per game but was held to just three points – the third-lowest total in her 63-game career – with Hulmi and Lewis taking turns on defense.
UWF will now travel to Montevallo (8-4, 8-3) to take on the Falcons this weekend for a pair of games. Friday's contest at Trustmark Arena is at 6 p.m. followed by a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m.
