MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The 15th ranked UWF Baseball Team dropped their series opener against Gulf South Conference opponent, Auburn Montgomery, by a final of 3-0 on Friday night at Lowe Field.
West Florida drops to 12-5 on the year while AUM improves to 11-7.
"We never could get anything going consistent on offense and you have to give props to their pitcher because he pitched very well tonight", UWF Head Coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. Â
Adam Imwalle led all Argonaut batters with two hits on the night.Â
Cullan O'Shea,
Dylan Menhennett,
Joey Wozniak and
Miller Hancock also had a hit, yet the offense could not find any rythm as they only had six hits for the contest, which was their second lowest total on the young season.
UWF was not able to find much success off of AUM starter, Troy Jones, who threw the complete-game shutout and finished with seven strikeouts. The greatest chances for West Florida came in the top of the fifth and sixth as they had a runner on third base with two outs in each inning, yet they were unable to bring the runner in both situations.
Ryan Brewer got the start for the Argos, pitching six innings and taking his first loss of the season to go to 4-1 on the year. The right-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, three walks while striking out two. After giving up a run in the first on two errors by UWF, the red-shirt junior settled down as he only allowed three hits over the next three innings. AUM would later score in the bottom of the fifth and sixth on a wild pitch and double to left-center.
After exiting in the bottom of the seventh, south-paw
Hunter Lucas, would throw the final two innings. Lucas was dominant in his final two innings as he struck out the final two batters of the seventh to keep the game at 3-0. He would set the Warhawks down in order in the bottom of the eighth.
The teams will meet again tomorrow with a double-header from Lowe Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
"We have to bounce back tomorrow in game two of the series", Jeffcoat continued. "I have confidence our team will respond well tomorrow."
