Game 1 | Game 2
MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Cullan O'Shea belted a home-run in each game, while the Argonaut pitching staff, headlined by
Evan Floyd and
Sean Means, was dominant again as UWF swept a double-header at Auburn Montgomery by finals of 8-4 and 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Lowe Field.
O'Shea started the scoring in each game with a home-run to right and left-center, respectively to pace the Argos' 21 hits combined in the two contests.
Adam Imwalle,
Jason Roberts, and
Matthew Estrada, all had three hits for UWF, while Estrada and O'Shea each had two RBI's in the double-header.
West Florida also had 17 strikeouts on the day from their pitching staff, with the five total runs given up, contributing the team lowering their staff earned run average to a paltry, 3.30 which is the lowest in the Gulf South Conference.
"It was a total team effort today", UWF Head Coach
Mike Jeffcoat said after the victories. "The pitching was very good with (Evan) Floyd in game and (Tyler) Dowdy and (Sean) Means in game 2. Sean had his best outing of the year, he was lights out! Additionally, our offense stayed with it in game one and in game two, we executed when we needed to and found a way to get it done."
With the victories, the Argonauts earned their fourth-straight series win.
UWF will now return home for a series against Christian Brothers on March 20
th and 21
st at Jim Spooner Field. Saturday's contests, a double-header, will begin at 1 p.m. while the Sunday match-up will begin at 1 p.m. as well.
Game 1: The Argos were able to quickly shake off the rust of game one of the series, as they quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a home-run to right center by O'Shea. It extended O'Shea's team lead of RBI's to 18 with his second blast of the year.
Floyd, making his sixth start of the year, began the game strong as he collected three strikeouts in the first two innings. The strikeout has been Floyd's speciality on the year as the right-hander finished with seven for the contest, giving him 37 for the year which is nine more than any other Argonaut.
AUM would strike back in the bottom of the third as Casey Henderson singled home Joseph Hartsfiel to tie the game at one.
After getting fanning five batters over the first five innings, Floyd would labor over the final three innings out of his outing, as he allowed multiple runners in each inning. However, the Pensacola native, would navigate his way out of trouble to finish by allowing one run on four hits, with four walks and seven strikeouts.
Following four straight scoreless innings, the UWF offense came to life in the top of the sixth.
Miller Hancock singled to third base to open the inning, before he was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
True Fontenot. Hancock would come home on the next at-bat, as Estrada singled again to center-field to put the Argos up 2-1.
With the run, Floyd was able to earn the win, which was his fourth of the year.
UWF would strike again in the top of the seventh as
True Fontenot chopped a single up the first-base line with the bases loaded, scoring Imwalle from third.
The Warhawks would put up a run in the bottom of the frame off of
Josh Pahlad to make it 3-2, before the Argonauts answered back with a four-run eighth inning. A walk by O'Shea and a single by Imwalle opened the inning, before an error by the AUM allowed O'Shea to score, giving UWF a two-run advantage.
Left Fielder,
Joey Wozniak, and catcher,
Sam Clement, followed with RBI singles in the next two at-bats, with Wozniak eventually scoring from third on a double-steal to make it 7-2.
AUM would score a run in the eighth and ninth off of UWF reliever,
Brendon Case, while Estrada would drive a deep-home run to left-center, his first of the season, to close the scoring.
Game 2: Once again, O'Shea led off the scoring with a home-run to left-center field to put the Argos up, 1-0, taking the team lead in homers in the process.
West Florida would find another in the run in the top of the fifth inning as
Sam Harris, earning the start at second base in game two, singled up the middle. After an error by the AUM pitcher, Harris and
Miller Hancock who bunted on the play, advanced to first and second. With runners on first and second, Fontenot delivered, driving a double to right-field, giving the Argonauts a two-run advantage.
After cruising through the first four innings of the contest, starting pitcher
Tyler Dowdy found himself in a jam during the bottom of the fifth. Dowdy would allow the first three runners to reach, while inducing a fly-out to left field to allow the Warhawks first run of the game, before being relieved for
Sean Means.
Dowdy finished going 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. AUM would tack on another run in the frame to tie it at two.
However, the Argonauts' offense would pick up their pitchers as they scored two runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Roberts and Clement would notch back-to-back doubles to make it 3-2, with Hancock adding a single up the middle to score Clement later in the inning.
From there, West Florida would rely on Means who in turn, delivered an electric performance as he threw 4.2 scoreless frames. He would finish with five strikeouts for the contest while only allowing two hits and two walks, on 67 pitches. Means only got better as the game went on, sending the Warhawks down in order in the eighth, all via the strikeout.
UWF would add a run in the top of the seventh as well on a
Joey Wozniak sacrifice fly to score Estrada.
