Game 1 | Game 2
PENSACOLA, Fla. -
Dylan Menhennett and
Cullan O'Shea each hit a walk-off home run in each game of a double-header to give the UWF Baseball Team two wins over Christian Brothers, both by a score of 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field.
The victories moved UWF to 16-5 overall and 15-5 in the Gulf South Conference while CBU drops to 2-15 on the year. West Florida will go for the series sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Jim Spooner Field.
Menhennett was a key cog in the Argos' offense all afternoon long as he accounted for four of the six runs that UWF scored on the day. The centerfielder also had three hits in game one, with O'Shea providing a multi-hit performance in game two. Catcher
Sam Clement was the only other Argonaut to register multiple hits on the day.
On the mound, UWF was dominant as they only allowed 11 hits in the two games combined, with only one being an extra-base hit. West Florida only used three pitchers on the day in
Evan Floyd,
Tyler Dowdy, and
Sean Means as the trio pitched 20 total innings, allowing four runs on 12 hits, walking three while striking out 18 batters. UWF lowered their team earned run average to 3.08, which is the lowest in the Gulf South Conference.
Game 1: The Bucs would quickly get on the board first as third baseman, Jaime Soto, opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the top of the first. Floyd would settle in though as the right-hander would strike out two batters in the rest of the frame to end the threat.
From then on, the Pensacola Catholic product was simply dominant as he only allowed two baserunners over his next six innings of work. Striking out eight Buccaneers over the next six frames, including three straight to end the sixth, Floyd cruised along after giving up the home run as he also set down CBU in order four different times over that span.
The Argos were able to respond early as they put up a response in the bottom of the first as
Miller Hancock singled to right field with one out. After moving to second on a ground-out by O'Shea, Menhennett delivered a RBI single through the right side to score Hancock and make it 2-1. After two straight scoreless innings, Menhennett came back to bat in the fourth and blasted his third homer of the season, to tie the contest at 2.
As mentioned, after the solo shot by Menhennett, the game quickly turned into a pitcher's duel as very little action happened on the bases for either side. Christian Brothers would threaten for the first time in many innings as they had a runner on second and third with two outs, but Floyd once again came through to strike out Reid Voss, swinging. Voss went 0-4 with four strikeouts in game one against Floyd.
Floyd faced the Buccaneers one more time in the ninth and although he gave up a lead-off the single, the red-shirt junior calmly got the next three batters with a pop-up to second base, a fly-out to right field and via a ground-out to second base.
The ground-out set the stage for a one-out home run to right-center by Menhennett, his fourth round-tripper of the season. With the homer, Floyd earned his fifth win of the season, as he moves to 5-0. Floyd went nine innings, allowing two runs on six hits, with two walks (one intentional), while striking out 11. He currently sits in second in the GSC in ERA (1.48), and opposing batting average (.170), while the Pensacola native is third in strikeouts with 48.
Jonathan Baldelli got the tough-luck loss for CBU, as he went 8.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one while striking out seven batters on 116 pitches.
Game 2: Christian Brothers once again found themselves with an early lead as Keegan Voss scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Luke Wewers off of
Tyler Dowdy, who got the nod in game two for the Argonauts.
Despite the early run, Dowdy rebounded to throw an absolute gem as the freshman would only allow two baserunners over the next six innings, with both coming in the top of the second frame. Tyler kept the Argos in the game, as he set CBU down in order in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh inning.
UWF's offense once again had trouble against the Bucs' starter, Blake Dallas, as the southpaw was dominant after a shaky start. Similar to Dowdy, Dallas would set the Argonaut's down in order in the third, fourth, and fifth inning as CBU held a tight, 1-0 advantage.
It was not until the bottom of the sixth when the Argos would finally get on the board as Menhennett came through once again. After an
Adam Imwalle walk with two outs put a runner out, UWF Head Coach
Mike Jeffcoat made a shrewd move to pinch run
Sam Harris for the second baseman. O'Shea got hit by a pitch in the next-at bat, setting up Menhennett's two-out RBI single down the third-base line to score Harris and tie the game at one apiece.
After a scoreless seventh inning by both squads, Dowdy would get himself into a jam in the top of the eighth. With runners on the corners and two outs, Coach Jeffcoat dipped into his bullpen for the first time in the double-header as he brought on reliever,
Sean Means. The freshman rewarded Jeffcoat with a swinging strikeout of CBU batter, J.D Goodspeed, to end the threat.
With the inning finished, it closed the book on Dowdy's day. In his longest career start, the Freshman from Plant City, Florida threw 7.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking none while striking out five.
Both teams had changes in regulation to score as CBU would strand a runner on third while Menhennett would get stuck on second.
UWF finally got a breather in the tenth inning as Dallas exited the game in the bottom of the frame, giving way to Jackson Lyons. Dallas only allowed four hits on the day while striking out 11.
While Antonio Fernandez roped a two-out RBI single in the top of the tenth to score Voss, Means did a solid job of retiring the next batter to give the Argos a chance in the bottom of the 11
th.
With the international-tie breaker in place to put
Sam Harris on second base, O'Shea would clobber the fifth pitch in the first at-bat of the inning over the right field fence to walk-it off for the Argos.
Means received his third win of the season thanks to the O'Shea homer. Sean now stands at 3-1 on the season after going 3.1 innings on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two.
