PENSACOLA, Fla. – On another picture-perfect day from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex, the West Florida Men's Tennis team took down Xavier University of Louisiana 5-2 to close out the weekend. After falling on Friday to Keiser, the Argos showed out during today's match against another NAIA powerhouse getting great efforts from the lower portion of the lineup to propel UWF to victory.
It was yet another great day in doubles for the Argonauts as they picked up wins from the number two and three positions to secure the lone point and head into singles play with the advantage.
Serdar Bojadjiev and
Lluis Miralles Miro teamed up once again from the No. 2 position and picked up another win as pair defeating Xavier's representatives 6-2 in their match.
Nicolas Lecoutre and
William Shkrob pulled out another thrilling doubles win coming out with a 7-5 victory from the No. 3 position.
Salvador Bandeira and
Gabriel Nery picked up their first loss on the year falling 4-6 from the No. 1 position before the lone point was secured for the Argos.
In singles play, UWF came out firing and relied on some strong efforts from the lower half of the lineup to secure the win on the day.
Miro got the nod from the No. 6 position today and did not squander it winning 6-2, 6-4 from his match. Nery was back at it today picking up another singles win this time with a 6-2, 6-3 victory from the No. 5 position.
Juan Motta got revenge today after dropping a heartbreaker on Friday winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 from the No. 4 position. The final point of the day came from
Juan Cabrera won picked up a 7-6, 6-4 win to continue his hot start on the season.
Bojadjiev and Bandeira were not able to pick up the victory today in either of their matches, however, both fought hard fighting back from first-set deficits until each ultimately fell in the third set.
"In singles we jumped on them quick and won handily from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions," Head Coach
Derrick Racine stated. "We really had to work hard though to secure the other two points at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. It was overall a great effort and a good win over a top NAIA opponent."
West Florida now has a few days off before a top-ten Division II tennis clash when the #4 ranked University of Indianapolis comes to town on Thursday.
