Multiple Argos Have Huge Days As UWF Completes Sweep Of Mississippi College

O'Shea and Roberts each have four RBI's in game one

Game 1 | Game 2

PENSACOLA, Fla.
- The 21st ranked UWF Baseball Team had huge days from Jason Roberts and Cullan O'Shea at the plate, while the pitching staff shut down Mississippi College on the mound, en route to a sweep of the double-header by finals of 10-0 and 10-2, on Saturday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field.

With the victory, West Florida moves to 11-4 on the year, while MC drops to 3-9 overall and 0-7 in the Gulf South Conference.  The 11 wins through 15 games is the fastest that the UWF Baseball program has reached the 10-win mark since 2014, when the Argos won 10 of their first 12 contests.

The 11 conference wins is the most by a GSC team this year as well.

Five different UWF players had a hit in both ends of the double-header, with right fielder Matthew Estrada and designated hitter Jason Roberts each having five combined between the two games.  The Argos also leaned on the long ball heavily as four Argonauts hit a homer on the day.  Center fielder, Dylan Menhennett, hit a home-run to left center in the second game, while Adam Imwalle, Roberts and Cullan O'Shea each hit one in game one.

West Florida was also dominant on the mound, allowing two runs on the day in 16 innings.  The pitching staff combined for 17 strikeouts with Evan Floyd, Tyler Dowdy, Sean Means and Josh Pahlad each fanning at least one batter. Dropping their staff earned run average to 3.45 after the weekend, UWF now leads the GSC in ERA as a team.

UWF will be back in action on Tuesday for their first non-conference game as they host Spring Hill at 5 p.m from Jim Spooner Field.  The Argos will then hit the road for the first time in 2021 as they travel to Auburn Montgomery for a series on Friday and Saturday.

Game 1: For the second straight game, West Florida received a dominant outing from a starting pitcher as Floyd threw a seven-inning complete game shut-out.  The Pensacola Catholic product only allowed three hits with no walks, while striking out 10 on an efficient 88 pitches.  The shut-out lowered Floyd's season ERA down to a paltry, 1.29 which is first in the GSC among starting pitchers, while his third win moved him into a tie for third in the conference.

Imwalle, a red-shirt senior, opened the scoring in the second inning with a homer down the left-field line.  Following two scoreless inning, the Argo offense when back to work in the bottom of the fourth as Menhennett led off the frame with a single through the left side.  After Menhennett stole second, Roberts ripped a double to right-center to score Menhennett and put the Argonauts up two.

Following a 1, 2, 3 inning which included two strikeouts by Floyd, UWF struck again for three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Back-to-back doubles by Estrada and O'Shea made it 3-0 with O'Shea and Menhennett later scoring on another double by Roberts, this time to right field.

West Florida would score again in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run homer by O'Shea, scoring Estrada and True Fontenot, while a Roberts homer and a MC balk to score Justin Dunnam, walked it off for UWF in the bottom of the seventh via the 10 run-rule.

Both O'Shea and Roberts would finish the contest with four RBI's apiece, pushing O'Shea into the team lead with 16 on the season.  The 16 are the fifth-most in the GSC.

Game 2: West Florida got on the board early again in game two, as Imwalle and Estrada each had RBI singles in the opening frame to put the hosts up 2-0 after one inning.  Menhennett would come around to score in the third on a balk by the Choctaws, while a Joey Wozniak RBI single would make it 4-0 through three.

Wozniak's three RBI's led all Argonauts in game two of the double-header.

Menhennett, a native of Mississippi, would once again get the Argonauts on the board with a home-run to left centerfield to open the bottom of the fifth.  The homer was Menhennett's second of the year, moving him into first on the squad.

The Argos would plate five in the bottom of the sixth as a Miller Hancock triple to right field, opened the inning.  After a Fontenot single, Estrada followed with a single of his own to score Hancock.

O'Shea would make it three straight singles with a base knock to right field, scoring Fontenot.  Estrada would later score on a wild pitch to make it 8-0, with Wozniak closing the Argonaut's night on offense with a two RBI single to score Sam Harris and Menhennett. The red-shirt senior tied Fontenot with his 14th run scored of 2021.

Tyler Dowdy got the start in game two for UWF, as he went three innings, allowing no runs on six hits with one strikeout.  Sean Means would relieve Dowdy in the top of the fourth, and Means turned in his most impressive start of the season in return.  Pitching three innings as well, the red-shirt freshman from Naples only allowed one hit while fanning three, which included the first two batters he faced.

Pahlad would finish the game for UWF, pitching the seventh, eighth and ninth inning's.  Pahlad bounced back after a rough seventh inning which included a two-run homer by Dylan Duplechain, by striking out four batters over the three innings.  The red-shirt junior earned his third save of the season by virtue of his three innings pitched.
