PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF bats continued to stay hot as the 21st ranked Argonaut Baseball Team pounded Spring Hill College, 13-3, on Tuesday night at Jim Spooner Field.
West Florida moves to 12-4 with the win while the Badgers drop to 4-5 after the loss.
"We hung in there in the first few innings until we got settled in and finally started swinging the bats", UWF Head Coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. We had guys in Imwalle, Estrada and Roberts do a lot of the heavy lifting, with the guys in front of them doing their job and getting into scoring position. The offense has been playing very well as of late."
UWF got contributions up and down the line-up as seven different players got a hit on the night.Â
Adam Imwalle,
Matthew Estrada and
Jason Roberts each tallied multi-hit nights with Imwalle and Estrada totaling three of their own.
Roberts, getting the start on the mound and at the plate, struggled in the first as he allowed the first two batters to reach. After a sacrifice fly to put the visitors up 1-0, Roberts would settle in as he would throw three innings, allowing just the one run on three hits, while walking one and striking out one on 41 pitches. Â
The Argonaut offense would help out Roberts in the bottom of the second, as Imwalle would blast a solo shot to left center, tying the game at one apiece. West Florida would strike again for two more in the fourth as back-to-back singles by
Dylan Menhennett and Imwalle put runners on first and second. After both advanced on a wild pitch, Roberts would spray a single to right field for his first two RBI's of the night, putting the Argos up 3-1.Â
Cullan O'Shea would tack on to the lead with a single in the bottom of the fifth to score
Miller Hancock. O'Shea maintained his team lead in RBI's with his 17th on the single.
SHC would make it 4-2 in the top of the sixth off of
Robert Sherlock, who had relieved Roberts in the top of the fourth. Sherlock would pitch 2 and two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on two hits, with one walk and one strikeout. Sherlock earned his first career win in the appearance.
In the bottom of the sixth, UWF came back in a big way as they sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. Wozniak delivered a one-out double to open the hit-parade, with pinch-hitters
Sam Clement and
Kyle D'Amour following with a walk and hit-by pitch. With the bases loaded, Wozniak and Clement scored on back-to-back wild pitches. Estrada would later double home Fontenot and D'Amour, with Roberts capping the inning with a three-home run.
Roberts finished the night with a team-high five RBI's, while he improved his season on-base plus slugging to .955.
The Badgers added a run in the top of the seventh off of
Brendon Case who had come in the seventh to make it 12-3 before Estrada would hit a Sac fly to score Clement, walking it off. It was Estrada's third run batted in of the night.
UWF will be back in action on Friday and Saturday for a three-game series at conference foe, Auburn Montgomery. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 5 p.m. with a Saturday double-header beginning at 1 p.m. the next day.
"This is our first road trip and for us it is great because we get to see how the guys will react on the road", Jeffcoat continued. "We will have to learn how to be in a different environment, and a different field. AUM is going to be a great test for us as they have a really good team and it will be our toughest test so far."
