LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 4 ranked UWF men's golf team cruised to a 28-shot win at the 40th annual Matlock Collegiate Classic at Lone Palm Golf Club on Tuesday. Additionally, senior
Alejandro Restrepo outdueled a pair of teammates for the medalist title.
UWF handled the high winds and fast greens to perfection, shooting a 3-under-par 285 on its way to a 3-under 861 team total. The Argonauts continued to apply pressure to the field after each round, leading by nine after round one and 17 yesterday before stretching it to a tournament-record 28 on Tuesday. The previous margin of victory was set by UWF in 2017 when it shot a tourney-record 34-under on its way to an 18-stoke cushion.
"It was a pretty dominating performance and I'm really happy with the way we played," UWF head coach
Steve Fell said. "It was very windy again today. The greens were rolling a 13 (on the Stimpmeter) and we had 15 to 20 mile per hour winds so the greens got hard and firm at times. Our guys were forced to have some really good course management."
Restrepo ended the event with four birdies on the back nine for a 70 to finish with a 71-73-70=214 total. It marked his first college title as he tied for the tournament lead with 13 birdies.
While he was making the last of his low numbers on 15, teammate
Jake DeZoort was a group ahead making birdie at Nos. 17 and 18 and a par on No. 1 to end the tournament a stroke back at 72-73-70=215.
Elias Haavisto wasn't as fortunate, finishing in fifth place at 66-72-77=216 after four bogeys on the back nine. Pensacola native
Cameron Bonner turned in his first career top 10 showing with a 76-74-71=221 as he tied for eighth place. His 37 pars were the most in the field as he has now played three of six rounds at par or better this season.
Carlos Marrero also had a birdie-string down the stretch with three in the final seven, compiling a 77-72-74=223 on his way to a tie for 16th position.
UWF has compiled a team stroke average of 285.1 through two events this year, including five of six rounds under par.
"It's no fun sitting at home with nothing to play in and everyone is excited to be out playing and competing in tournaments," Fell said. "Everyone is super pumped up to get out and play against top competition."
The win marks the third Matlock title for UWF after the squad won in both 2011 and 2017. Since the event moved to Lone Palm GC in 2008, UWF is the only school to win the title three times.
An Argonaut has now claimed medalist honors three times since UWF began competing in the event. Matthew Galloway won back-to-back Matlocks in 2007 and 2008, with Restrepo joining him this year.
UWF will return to play next week in the Southeastern Collegiate, hosted by Valdosta State at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. Play begins on Monday, March 15.
